Private recurrent miscarriage clinic in London

Hello ladies,
I had my 3 miscarriage two weeks ago. It was missed miscarriage and I had D&C. We were heartbroken, many years of TTC. Luckily we have one beautiiful girl. So we decided to stop trying. However, after two weeks, I have realized, I am still not ready to give up. I am 39, so time is not on my side. We are considering to go private and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good private clinic in London?

Hello. I’m really sorry about your miscarriages.

I went to see Dr Shehata at the Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic (he has offices in London and Epsom). I had my DD, then 5 miscarriages and then finally had my DS in Dec. Dr Shehata deals with Natural Killer cells (the theory behind is that some women have an overactive immune system that attacks the embryo). His treatment is steroids.

Just to give you a heads up - it is not cheap. I think the initial tests are around the 2.5k mark and then depending what your results are you go from there.

Google NK cells and recurrent miscarriage. Lots of info online. Another reason for recurrent miscarriage is blood clotting disorders. Have you had any tests done?

@PJ12 thanks for sharing! That is expenseive I have been trough infertility treatments. Although I have not been tested for NK, I have been given prednisolon while I did IVF, none successful unfortunately. I have had DVT so I use clexane during pregnancy, that should prevent blood clot. The only thing we have not checked is kayrotyping. But I am not sure what that would help...

It’s an NHS MC clinic that also offers a private service.

Yes, read Lesley Regan's book. You don't need a private clinic, btw, the NHS will refer you after 3 miscarriages. In the meantime, go and see your GP, ask for a prescription for the highest dose folic acid, and ask her if it is safe for you take a baby aspirin each day. Those two things are what the consultant will probably tell you do while other investigations are being carried out.

@sagh I also went to St Mary’s alongside Dr Shehata. I found that with St Mary’s unless you had a blood clotting disorder there wasn’t much that they offered.

You can go there privately or via NHS. I self referred via NHS. The wait is long though. I think I waited about 3 months for my first apt, had loads of test done, then had to wait another 8 weeks for them to repeat the tests, and then another 4 to 6 weeks for results. So it was about 6 months before I even got to see one of th consultants. I didn’t mind as I was already seeing Dr Shehata and used St Mary’s to get a lot of tests done to offset the cost with Dr Shehata. If you go privately you will get seen much quicker and the wait between appointments isn’t as long.

I also had 2 miscarriages while on steroids. One was a natural miscarriage so I’m not sure what happened there, the other was a mmc and I had the embryo tested and that one ca,e back positive for trisomy 16. I know that prednisone has a high success rate so maybe worth giving it another shot.

Also, I know a lot of women have been successful seeing Dr Siobhan Quenby in Coventry. She also tests for NK cells but via scratch (as opposed to a blood test that Dr Shehata does). It’s a one fee of £350 so much more affordable than Shehata. Definitely worth giving it a go.

Not all MC clinics are equal: my local one (large London teaching hospital) was poor IMO, v basic questions/tests and messed up the clotting one, but did do the generic karyotyping tests on DH and me, which, unless you need any invasive tests such as hysteroscopy are the most expensive privately.

St Mary’s offered a lot more than the blood clotting tests. The doctors there didn’t hold much truck with the NK cells theory at the time I went (some years ago now)

They didn’t advise aspirin.

@1wearpurple thanks for the advice! Yes, they have refered me, but my GP said it will take time and considering my age, I may consider private.
@PJ12 Thanks for the suggestion. I will contact Dr Siobhan Quenby and see what she can offer us.
@Loopytiles as I mentioned I use clexane while pregnant. So any blood clot issue should be covered.

I went as a private patient to Professor Regan's clinic at St Mary's (didn't see Prof Regan herself, though). I got my GP to refer me. Cost about £400 for appointments and tests.
