Partial Molar Pregnancy

Hi everyone - some of you may know me from the other thread, first pregnancy missed miscarriage. Lots of supportive ladies on there - it's the best! My only reason for posting a separate query here is that I have a very specific, rare issue now and I need someone who has been through it to help me cope.

I received a letter yesterday saying I have a follow-up appointment on Wednesday to discuss pathology results following a D&C for my mmc in February (12 weeks, NHB at 9 weeks, 31 yrs old, first pregnancy ever). After reading everything online, it seems NHS only does this if the tissue tests positive for a complete or partial molar pregnancy. I saw the baby on the screen, so I think it will be a partial molar and I am absolutely, completely devastated because I know this means I will have to wait another six months to a year before ttc again. Never mind possible chemo if the hcg levels do not cooperate. I feel like I've lost everything in life recently and the "c" word scares me because I lost the baby on the one year anniversary of mum's death from breast cancer last year. So I am barely hanging on here.

If you have had a partial molar or know someone who has, can you please help save my sanity by telling me how it went? I had a BFN three weeks after the D&C (two weeks ago now), so surely my hcg levels cannot be that high right now?? No AF but body was trying to gear up for O when I got this gutting news, so suspect she is on her way too. How high can my levels be and do you think they will just monitor for a few months (maybe 3 instead of 6) and let me start ttc again early? I need some hope to make it through the day right now.

Did anyone have an hcg level of under 10 at six weeks post mc/mmc? Do you know if it goes back up after it has dropped to 10, or pretty safe to say it will just go back to zero now in a week or so? Interested in comparing hcg numbers if anyone has them. Thanks!

Hi @sadtoday21, so sorry to hear about what you’ve been through.
I had a partial molar in 2008, we found out at 12 weeks after having seen a very slow heartbeat at 7 weeks. We were advised not to ttc again for 6 months, and to be honest I’m now glad we had that time to come to terms with what had happened. Our partial molar was immediately after a mc at 8 weeks, so it was a very tough time.
I did a load of research at the time as my gynae was next to useless - I remember reading somewhere that it was very uncommon to have to have chemo after a partial, but much more common after a full molar pregnancy.
I have been pregnant many times since then, including with my daughter in 2014. Each time I just had to have a blood test six weeks after the pregnancy ended, to check my hcg levels had gone back down. It was horrendous going through a partial molar with all the worry and uncertainty, but I have to say that it has not caused any other problems since 2008.
Good luck to you, it’s not an easy time I know Flowers

@Chintaria thank you so much for sharing your story with me. I'm so sorry you had to go through this as well. It's hard to find other people who have had a partial molar, even on here, so I really appreciate you reaching out. Did you go back to 5 hcg relatively quickly? I know it was a long time ago, but I'm trying to get a sense of how long it takes hcg levels to drop, since I desperately want to go back to "normal." Of course, it's probably different for everyone. Thank you again and I'm so happy you went on to have a beautiful daughter X.

@sadtoday21 if I remember correctly it took less than a month. I think I went back for a blood test four weeks after my ERPC and the hcg level was negative, so under 5 & it stayed that way.
I would have thought if your level has dropped to 7.5 already that it will probably now be less than 5... It tends to happen quite quickly. We lost a little boy at 16 weeks, and even then I still had my period a month after having delivered him, which I was amazed at.
When is your next blood test going to be? I can’t remember how many I had afterwards, just to check whether my hcg level was still okay.
Thinking of you Flowers

Thanks @Chintaria that's really helpful. It's been 6.5 weeks now since my d&c and my levels still aren't completely normal yet. I haven't had an AF either. My next blood test was today, so hopefully I'll have the results in a few days. I feel so desperate to be negative and to have my cycle back. The waiting is really unbearable...I'm wondering if it will be two months before my body is healed. The pmp on top of the mmc is just too much...

I am so sorry for your losses. The 16 week lost must have been particularly painful. Did you have more than one pmp? Thank you again for reaching out and hope all is well now xxx.

OMG my hcg has gone up from 7.5 hcg blood test last week at the EPU. CX said my blood test was 45 hcg and urine was 29 hcg. How is this possible? I really don't believe that the machines at the EPU and CX are that different that it would go from 7.5 to 45 in a week. And 29 in my urine is a positive pregnancy test. In fact, I just took a pregnancy test again and it's positive. Help! Do I have cancer? Am I pregnant again?

I feel so defeated, I just can't do this anymore.

Does anyone know what this means:

last week - epu blood test showed hcg 7.5 (three BFNs before that)
today - CX said my blood test showed hcg 45 (now I have a BFP)

We dtd five days before O, before I knew about the partial molar obviously. Could I be pregnant or is the molar returning? Has anyone gotten pregnant again before the reached negative and/or before first AF? It's only been 7 weeks since my d&c.

Sorry @sadtoday21, have only just seen this now. Have you had advice from a doctor on what the rise in hcg could mean? Fingers crossed for you that it is a new pregnancy, and that all is well.
Please update when you can 🤞🏻

Hi everyone, I just got a call from the hospital saying I had a partial molar pregnancy. I had a missed miscarriage and went for surgical management 6 weeks ago. I'm going to the doctors tomorrow to discuss it and I'm terrified. I just want too say this thread is making me feel less scared and more hopeful

AnxiousPoster · 30/03/2024 19:39

Hi @sadtoday21 @Samnewmom i am now struggling with a PMP under the care of Charring Cross - how did your journey go? Have you had children since the PMPs? This was my first pregnancy & devastated.

Samnewmum · 31/03/2024 21:58

@AnxiousPoster Hi I'm sorry you are experiencing this. I was also under Charring Cross Hospital. I had blood and urine tests done every 2 weeks until my HCG reached below 5. That took about 3 months. I got pregnant as soon as I got the all clear and my rainbow baby just turned 1 🙂 I know the process is devastating but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Trust me you got this!!

Pinkpopp · 20/10/2025 18:54

Hi @sadtoday21 I know its been a few years but what happened with your hcg levels and all that? Currently going through the same thing and my head is fried!!
