sac but no embryo at 6+3 - it's not looking good, is it?

Went for an early scan today as I've been having severe cramping (no bleeding though). I'm 6+3 by date of LMP, or possible 5+3 by ovulation date, but certainly no further behind than that. Saw a sac with nothing in it; Dr said that he would expect a healthy pregnancy to be further along at this stage, even accounting for my longer-than-usual cycle length. I have to go back in two weeks for another scan to confirm.

I had a full-term neonatal loss last year, and a mmc earlier this year. Can't believe this is possibly happing again.

I was same at 6 wks but had heartbeat at 7 weeks. Sadly ended in miscarriage but don't lose faith, 6 weeks is still very early. Good luck xxFlowers

LMP is irrelevant if you know when you ovulated. If you're 5+3 by ovulation date, then it's perfectly feasible that you wouldn't see much beyond a sac atm.

I think you can't know anything either way atm.

Have you had any bloods or is it just the wait for a scan now?

Sorry for your own loss ranchgirl, but thank you for giving me hope.

Dr seemed to think that it was too far behind the norm even going by ovulation dates ShowofHands, although having done a bit of googling I can see that its relatively normal to only see a sac at 5 weeks. They didn't do bloods. Guess I will just have to wait it out for the next two weeks.

I'm so sorry for what you're going through. And for your previous losses Thanks

I saw a sac with a teeny tiny fetal pole when I should have been 6+3. Went back in a week and saw growth and a heartbeat. Sadly it shortly afterwards ended in miscarriage. Absolute emotional roller coaster.

I really will be keeping my fingers crossed for you OP.

I had early scans with both my dds. The first time I was 5+4 and the sonographer saw a fetal pole and heartbeat (although I couldn't make much out). The second I was 6+5 and got full view in abdominal scan. I had bleeding with both my pregnancies, but it's me just a weird thing.

I dunno there will be someone along in a minute with a different story but I don't think from people I know I don't think generally it is a good sign if they tell you that you are further behind than thought. Taking account of the fact you were 5+3 though I think that is very very early ..... I guess the position could impact at that time and it is perfectly reasonable there would not be much visible.

So fingers crossed and good luck....

How are you doing, OP? Flowers

SaveMeTheWaltz · 28/10/2015 07:44

I'm alright thanks Serving, just waiting it out. Having looked at some sonography books and websites, it seems that 5+3 would be very early to see an embryo or fetal pole (which usually appears at the end of the fifth week). I think that the sonographer just freaked me out by using my LMP rather than ovulation date to date the pregnancy. Hopefully that is the case, but will know in another week or so.

I do think that's very early.
If you're not bleeding or in pain that will be good.
Fingers crossed for you
Thanks

Sorry, just realised you have cramping,
I had loads in early pregnancy and all worked out ok.

Just updating in case anyone else finds themselves in this situation and is looking for positive stories. I has my second scan yesterday (so 8+3 by LMP or 7+3 by ovulation date), and saw a little wriggly embryo with a good strong heartbeat; by measurements they put me at eight weeks. Both very relieved (DP cried) and crossing our fingers that everything goes smoothly from here on. Thank you to all those that offered their support x
