I'm having a mc. Hospital or stay home?

I was 11 weeks and the mc started weds night. Bleeding got heavier, cramps etc. a&he on weds night. Scan thurs.

Bleeding now really heavy and painful. Passing large clots which I'm finding really distressing.

I couldn't physically manage a journey to hospital.

What are the options/risks here? I'm worried if I call 111 they'll want me to go in. Do GPs even do house calls now? Would I get antibiotics for an infection or does this need surgical intervention to remove products?

I'm not expecting a diagnosis, but just trying to gather my thoughts here whilst dh is getting the children off to their grandparents for the night. Thanks.

So sorry for you. I had 3 all at 10-13 weeks, so I know what you're going through. Went to hospital for first and it was a waste of time- you feel awful, but there's nothing they can do to speed it up or make you feel better. Plus there's a lot of waiting around to be seen. Based in my experiences at 11 weeks it's unpleasant but manageable with lots of extra thick sanitary towels and ibuprofen. Perhaps wait and see how it goes and head to hospital if you start feeling awful (although A&E on a Sat will be grim).

Also, they won't do anything re. removing retained product until much later after the mc if you haven't stopped bleeding. You'll get antibiotics if you get an infection, but again that is something then diagnose later.

The clots are really bothering me. To be able to feel them is horrible.

I had c sections so I've never even given birth.

The bleeding after c sections are like heavy periods. This is some other hell.

I think the advice is to go in to hospital if you develop a temperature or soak through 3 pads an hour. It happened to me very recently and the clots are very distressing I couldn't agree more. I found being in hospital a bit pointless really. Unfortunately there is nothing anyone can do.

Dye, I had a mmc at 12 weeks found on my dating scan on the thurs. I booked an ERPC but ended up losing everything at home on the sat (sadly I saw everything during the MC at home.) They did an internal scan on the Monday and found I still needed the ERPC because of retained material. The general rule is if you are soaking a pad every hour then you should present to A&E to make sure you're ok. I hope that helps? It's awful when you have other DC to consider. I was told if I had ANY worries to call the EPU or Emergency Gynae unit (gynae ward at the weekend) if I needed to, this might give you more direction rather than just turning up at A&E. If you do go to A&E then make a fuss and ask for a separate room to wait and make sure the receptionist knows you are in agony/bleeding heavily, they don't always realise... PM me if you need to xx

Can I also suggest that you try to eat iron rich foods in the coming weeks. You will be lacking quite a bit at the moment and for me it made me feel pretty ill. I couldn't afford to be weak and ill with a toddler and it was a struggle.

Dye I'm so sorry this is happening to you and I totally understand about the clots when I had a late term MC there was one clot that terrified me more so than DC body and the placenta.
I would call the hospital. Do you have a midwifery triage?
If you are loosing a lot of blood and passing clots they may want to know.
At the very least someone will be able to sort your out a prescription for some proper pain relief.

For infection (not always the same) keep an eye on your body temperature, feeling disoriented and abdominal pain. I know you already have abdominal pain but when I got infected it was a different sort of pain in a particular spot and very tender.

I have some strong stuff in the meds cabinet (in date). So I've taken a naproxen. Dh is a pharmacist so feel confident that side of things is going to be ok.

The pad soaking and clots are biggest concern.

Seems to be improving here. Blood loss slowing down? I've eaten tea, had some spatone with juice, had a shower and taken a diazepam. Hot water bottle is helping.

So is mumsnet and shit TV. (And DH - he's been marvellous).

Dye glad you're feeling ok :) maybe call the epu on Monday still and get a scan to see how things are progressing? I don't know about you but I felt better knowing if it was all over or not. Hope you have a reasonable night, hot water bottle def helped me! X

A repeat scan is booked for Thursday, so unless there are more dramatic changes I'll just wait until then.

It's an internal scan, and frankly my vagina would like to be left well alone at the moment! [Grin]

I'd stay at home. I spoke to my GP on the phone when I had my second mc. I hadn't bothered to tell them I was pregnant as it was less than 11 weeks. She told me to go home and take it easy (I was at work but I'd started to mc during the weekend). I bought chocolates, bubble bath and a dressing gown on the way home. I'm quite relaxed about these things (it was my second mc) but I think going to the hospital would have been stressful (as you inevitably will be surrounded by pregnany women). It is an awful thing and I wish you a swift recovery. I remember someone telling me that having a mc didn't effect your ability to conceive again and I think that's a great thought to hang onto.

Thank you. I'm feeling the worst should be over now. Im trying not to spend too much time on the loo, but let the pad do the work. That's less distressing. Glad I'm at home though.

I'm not overly worried about ttc again, this one was unplanned so I'm not stressing about that.

My poor 7yo dd was really upset at seeing me in pain which was hard. I tried to hide them from it, but she's not daft.

I'm glad to read you feel the worst has passed and you have managed to stay at home.

I wish I'd had MN and a decent husband all those years ago with mine.

I felt no physical pain during my mc which made it harder to accept. It won't feel real for a while. Just prepare yourself as best you can.

Physically I've never had pain like it (never been in labour - 2 c sections). I'm still 'traumatised' by the products dropping into the toilet bowl. I wasn't ready for that.

Me too! Mine was 4 weeks ago and I don't think ill ever forget feeling contractions then stuff falling out.
Have you been advised to keep anything that looks like tissue and not clots? I was and although it was horrendous to collect and keep (in the fridge) it helped the epu to see that my mc was complete. Don't do it if thought of it worries you though.
Also take care of yourself this next week you will be feeling rough and fragile weak and weepy!.
