Are you always offered a scan after an early miscarriage?

I've posted another thread describing what I believe is my miscarriage, so whilst I'm gradually beginning to accept that's what it is, I'm now reading up on what happens next.

I am noticing that many people who miscarry at about the same time as I have, are all being referred for scans to check there's no tissue left inside. Whereas although my doctor said this morning I should go in to book a scan, later today I described what I had expelled and he deduced that was indeed likely a miscarriage, and to now instead just wait ten days then do a preg test again.

But in these 10 days waiting, if there's any tissue left inside would it not be at risk of causing infection? Presumably if that happens I'll know about it! But I'm just surprised the doctor didn't mention it, or just get me booked in for a scan anyway.

Did everyone else get a scan after a miscarriage?

I'm so sorry for your loss and sorry you are going through this.

How far gone were you? I was offered a scan and started miscarrying at 8+3.

If you are concerned, go back x

I'm surprised you weren't offered a scan. I work on a gynaecology ward, and all the ladies who come in to Women's Out Patients with miscarriages are scanned. I would recommend a scan to be on the safe side, but if your GP was confident enough based on what you told him, then maybe not. if you'd gone into A&E you would have definitely been given a scan, but not necessarily if your consultation with the GP was just over the phone. Don't hesitate to go back to the GP if you start feeling worse, such as having a temperature, pain, heavier bleeding than you have now, or anything else.

I am sorry this has happened to you, it is a difficult thing to go through. I hope you are feeling better very soon.

Sorry for your loss. When I miscarried I had previously had a scan because of light bleeding. The sac measured 5 weeks when I should of been 6 and a half weeks. So they told me to come back in 10 days. In that ten days I had miscarried. So the day before the second scan I called them and told them what had happened. I wasn't bleeding anymore and was already getting a negative pregnancy test. She told me on the phone that as I got the negative result that everything must have passed. She said if I start to feel Ill then go straight to a&e. No need to come in and have the second scan.
It must depend on the hospital and how far along you was.
Hope you start to feel better soon.
