Confusion, can anyone make sense of this?

Hi,

Please bear with me and follow this if you can!

Very late period, suspected pregnancy but before I did a HPT I had heavy bleeding, cramps and passed what looked like a sac. It was all very unusual and on speaking with my doctor she said it sounded like an early miscarriage but we would never be 100% sure as I had never had a positive test.

After the bleeding, about 4 weeks later, I had what I thought was a normal period.

Two weeks later I had very light bleeding for a few days.

I expected my next period 2 weeks after this light bleeding but it has now been 5 weeks and there has been nothing.

We are not trying for another baby just yet and have been very careful although I am no longer on the pill as it disagreed with me. My periods are normally very regular. I am not pregnant, I have done multiple tests. I have been tested for a hormone imbalance but it was negative. I have occasional sharp cramps that feel like period cramps but they tend to be on my right side.

Is it normal for periods to be messed up like this after a very early miscarriage (if indeed it even was one)? Should I be going back to my doctor for more tests?

I had an early m/c at 6 weeks, my periods were all over the place for about 6 months after before they settled back into a routine.

So sorry for the not def knowing but it does sound like you have had a loss! It's def true your periods are going to be all over the place for a while! Mine was messed up while I even had 2 in the same month!!!
With my early losses my AF returned fairly quickly but really heavy!
With my later one it took ages for period to come back!
Take it easy and try not to over think it!
I had my ectopic and tube removal in April and July had my BFP am currently 32 weeks pregnant!

Hello. It does sound like you may have had an early loss. If that's the case then its very normal for your cycles to be messed up afterwards. I've had 3 mc and it always takes a while for my cycles/hormones to calm down. The other thing that sprang to mind was that you may have had implantation bleeding (the light spotting you said you had 2 weeks after the mc) although if you've been careful and done tests this is unlikely.

I often get pain in one side when I ovulate and also in early pregnancy (I think from the corpus luteum) so either is a possibility for you?

If I were you I'd test again in a few days to check for sure. If negative you might just need to wait until your cycle regulates itself. Try to be healthy, rest and take vitamins etc. acupuncture and reflexology can also help with hormone imbalance.

Hi teaandchocolate, thanks for the message. I too though that I may have had implantation bleeding which is why I was testing, after a few weeks of testing I am pretty confident but I have just done another HPT to be sure and it is negative. I was thinking of having some acupuncture so thats a good idea, I'm trying to relax and be healthy, as much as i can with a 2 year old running around me. My partner is very very supportive so that helps a lot. I just wish things would regulate so I can move on and stop replaying the whole thing in my mind. I feel like because we weren't trying and because I never had a positive test, even thought I know I was pregnant, I don't really have any right to 'mourn' as such, although it hurts. It's hard.

I know its just so frustrating when you don't know what's going on with your body! I can't really take my own advice as I'm currently ttc and stressed out as AF hasn't arrived but keep getting bfn. So reckon I ovulated really late (& missed it!). We just have to keep going and stay sane.

Running after your dc should help with that! And I definitely recommend acupuncture - cant say I enjoy the needles but it does seem to work. Good luck!

Update - went to see my [lovely] doctor, she says it was a mc, and it's normal to grieve. Going for an internal scan tomorrow [yikes] and swab, after that if we have no answers and the pain continues then we're looking at a referral to gynae. Bit happier but dreading all the poking around. Thanks for all the advice x

That's really good she was so understanding, always nice to find a good gp. And don't worry at all about the internal scan, I've had millions and they're fine and don't hurt - better than a smear as no speculum. Good luck with everything.
