Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Midwife overly negative or am I clutching at straws?

Sorry if this is long and rambling I have been awake and crying for nearly 24hrs! After ttc baby #2 for 3 years finally got a bfp on 24/11, Last period started on 26/10 so I should be 7wks now. Went for bloods on tues & thurs this week midwife called say hcg has gone up but not doubled. She then went on to tell be basically there is no hope and I should expect a very heavy period in the next week or so. I argued the point with her and she has reluctantly sent me for more blood work later today ( I'm not in the uk) and I have arranged for and early scan on tues 18th. Am I really clutching at straws here or is it to soon to lose hope after just one set of blood results, I asked could I maybe be not as far along as I think she says this is very unlikely based on my dates.I just feel totally heartbroken.

I don't have any knowledge or advice unfortunately but didn't want to leave you unanswered. Is it likely that doing a pg test now would give you an answer? it sounds so worrying, sending positive thoughts your way and hoping for a good outcome at your scan on Tuesday.

Thanks for the reply I know nobody can really tell me what the outcome will be I think I just needed to write it down as I can say the words out loud yet. Did a test this morning still showing possative so I guess its just a waiting game now.

Were your levels also low?

HCG is supposed to double every 48-72 hours in early pregnancy, but as things progress this slows down to every 96 hours. As i understand it Hcg levels might well not double in 48 hours at 7 weeks.

I hope you have better luck with your scan. Get them to do it transvaginally as they will get a better view.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 16/12/2012 07:27

I think she was possibly being negative given that she only has your hcg levels to go on. I've read other MN threads on this topic with a good outcome so I would wait for more blood work and/or scans before you lose all hope.

Bakingtins · 16/12/2012 18:02

I think that's very negative. Were you anxious before the bloods were done? (i.e. have you had any bleeding etc or is it routine to do the bloods where you are?) I've heard of lots of cases where the bloods do not follow the pattern to the letter but everything is ok. I guess only the scan can tell you. Crossing everything you see a little bean with a strong heartbeat on Tuesday.

I'm really sorry - that sounds horribly negative of her! Try and stay positive! She might have got it totally wrong. Thinking of you x

Thank you for all your kind replies, I have just had my blood results form sat and my levels are now at 6562 so have gone up but still not doubled. Sadly this weekend I have had some cramping and now a little bleeding. I have a scan tomorrow but have prepared myself for the worst.

Just an update, Mon overnight and Tues morning had very bad cramping and a lot of blood and clots. Went for my scan as arranged and the lovely Dr confirmed that I had passed the sack. She has given me some strong pain killers and my Anti d injection, so although sad news looks like everything is proceding as it should. I was particulally worried as I have a 10hr flight the the UK on Thurs and by pure fluke the Dr is on the same flight! so if any problems do arise its a comfort to know she will be near by. Thank you all for your kind words and support I feel very sad but very positive to start trying again in the new year plus I have a very excited 5 yr old looking forward to Christmas to cheer me along. Thank you all again and best wishes to any of you still going through this. xx
