Late miscarriage at 19weeks- having my first period after- so heavy & so many clots-normal??

Hi

Please can anyone tell me if they think this is normal or they have experienced this? I lost my beautiful baby at 19 weeks gestation 5 weeks ago. I bleed for about 3 weeks (not too heavy- but did have 5 huge peices of retained placenta come out of me over the week and had antibiotics)- then nothing for a week.... then started again last Thursday (must be my first period)
The first couple of days it was quite light- but since sunday I am flooding- soaking a maxi nightime pad in an hour with so many clots (must have passed hundreds!) sitting on the loo last night (sorry if TMI) the clots were just dropping out of me?

Have any of you been thru this & so you think its normal?

I am so sorry for your loss. I haven't any experience but I think you should see a doctor to make sure the placenta has come fully away. Hugs.

I did call the doctor- but she seemed pretty useless- said that because I had a week with no blood she wasent too concerned (famous last words! ) she said.. if it were products of conception- i wouldnt have ever stopped bleeding for that week?? but im sure this stuff coming out of me is not normal? maybe it is? -but better out than in!? xxx

I am not a doctor so can't really say! Do you know any midwives you can ask?

hello

Sorry to read this, it must have been a really hard time. I lost my baby at 16 weeks a couple of months back. I was lucky (if thats the right word?!) as it all came out at the time (confirmed on scan), and the bleeding really slowed down for one more week and no more clots. And when my period came back (4 weeks after miscarriage) it was normal and no clots.

I found the labour ward pretty useful when I lost mine and was allowed to ring them as it was post 16 weeks. Perhaps you could try ringing their helpline to speak to a midwife? Your bleeding does sound very heavy, but I don't know much more than my experience, so I couldn't say for sure. I really hope you're feeling better and it all stops soon, I hated the bleeding post miscarriage as it just draws it all out. take care xx

You poor thing. I am so sorry. I think the bleeding sounds heavy. Is there any way you could get to A&E for a second opinion? miscarriage.about.com/od/treatmentrecovery/f/miscarriagebleeding.htm Hope it calms down for you. Take care x

Hi jkb, sorry to hear of what you're going through.

As you may recall, I also lost my little boy at 19 weeks a few months back. My experience, however, was completely different from yours as other than some clots, everything came out cleanly at the time of birth. I bled for 8 days after the loss lots of cramping and clots and then it stopped. Had some spotting 15 days later and then a normal period a month after the m/c.

From what I understand, normal is different for everyone. I was in fact told that I might bleed for weeks on and off or might stop bleeding soon. Then I was told that the first period after might be very heavy, but that didn't happen either. I was also told that the first period might come anywhere between 4 and 20 weeks later! So it sounds like there's a range of experiences that fall in the normal category.

Do try to get a second opinion if possible. Hoping things get better soon. xox
