Dates moved back by one week, but no foetus visible. Any hope?

I just had my first gynae appointment today at what I thought was 6+1. I thought my dates might be out a bit, as I normally have a regular 28 day cycle and I usually ovulated bang on the middle of my cycle. However, following the stillbirth of my DS2 at 35 weeks in mid April my cycles have been a bit odd.

Anyway, when I poas on the day af was due I didn't get a line within 3 minutes, but in my desperation I checked it after about another 4 minutes and a very, very faint line appeared. I'd never had that before, so tested again 3 days later and got a bfp. The gynae did an internal scan today (they always do those in Belgium up to about 13 weeks) and he could see the gestation sac (big black hole) and what he thought might be the tiniest beginning of an embryo (a little pin prick sized dot), but he reackoned by the measurements I am only about 5+2.

So, I have to have another scan in 2 weeks and am praying everything is OK. Can anyone give me any positive stories about this? As I had a mmc at 13 weeks before DS1 I'm finding it hard to stay positive, even though I did suspect my dates were out and I know (in the sane part of my mind) that it can be normal no to see much at 5ish weeks.

I'm so sorry to hear of your losses, I can't begin to imagine.

From what you describe, it does sound like things could be okay actually. If you ovulated six days late, you might have assumed you were POAS at 14 days past ovulation (dpo) when AF was normally due, but in reality it was only 8dpo, or 3w1d. At 8dpo, it's quite possible to see a really, really faint line - often only outside the time limit. By 11dpo, which was maybe when you tested 3 days later, it's normal to see quite an obvious BFP.

As you say, that's all you'd expect to see for 5w2d. So given the strength of the lines when you first tested, it does all seem to point to a later ovulation for you. Fingers crossed that is the case!

It's a shame you can't get a scan in a week's time as that would probably be just as conclusive, but two weeks time and a heartbeat would be even more reliable.

Wishing you the very best of luck - let us know how it turns out if you can!

Thanks for the supportive message. I guess I figured I was maybe a few days out, but I wasn't really expecting him to say I was a week out so I was a bit taken aback. I think he probably scheduled it for 2 weeks' time as that way results would be conclusive either way. I checked DS1's scan photos and I had a scan wi him at 5+3 that shows the gestation sac and a tiny little speck about 1.2mm long, so I suppose that would tie in with what I saw on Wednesday at the gynae. I suppose I'll just have to try and forget about it and not worry forthe next few days. I'll definitely come back and let you know but for now I am massively crossing my fingers.

Hi amyboo, just wondered if you had had your second scan yet and how things were looking? Really hoping for the best for you - I'm so sorry you've been through such an incredibly sad and traumatic time. I'm based in Belgium too - I know it can be hard to be away from family at these times. Wishing you all the best and crossing my fingers for you.Xx

Scan on Thursday, so I guess we'll see. On DS's scan at 5+3 he was actually 0.12mm not 1.2mm, so that's made me a little less stressed... Have a few more symptoms now - bigger boobs and a belly like I'm 5 months pregnant by the end of each day (!!!) so am hoping they're all good signs. Ingers crossed.

Fingers crossed indeed. I'm a few weeks ahead of you and have the bloating too. It's certainly a drag, but all hopefully a good sign for you. Sending you lots and lots of good wishes ahead of thursday.

Hoping you get good news today!

Well, all good so far, although I'm still not counting on it allworking out. Scan yesterday showed a clearly visible little baby complete with a good heartbeat. Masuring about 7+4 which puts me about 5 days behind what I thought, which makes sense with the strange pregnancy test result etc.

So am definitely relieved for now, but having previously had a mmc at 13 weeks after a healthy scan at 9+5, I'm not counting on anything just yet. Another scan in three weeks to see if all's going well.

Oh that's very encouraging. I'm really glad. Of course you have to take it one day at a time, especially given what you've been through, but I really hope that this might be a healthy straightforward pregnancy for you. It sounds like the date worries have all been clarified and things are looking good at the moment, so I hope it will all continue that way.

I'm about 10+5 and have my twelve week scan in just over a week. Keep your fingers crossed for me too.

Oh, that's wonderful news! Keeping everything crossed it all goes well. Keep us updated!
