I am having a miscarriage - how long does the bleeding pain last?

I don't even know how pregnant I was but guess it was early on, or later and non viable from start... last period was 13 weeks ago, with a one day light bleed 5 weeks ago, positive tests from begining of last week and blood test last thursday confirming all was well. Yesterday very heavy bleeding and pain started. How long do I expect this to last? Do I need a scan after? Feel dismissed by doctors...

Im so sorry that youre going through this Sunny.

Not really sure about time scales etc, sorry.

Just wanted to ask if youve been to the early pregnancy unit (EPU)? I had heavy bleeding/gushing and very painful cramps the day before my 12 week scan.

After going to the EPU I was advised to have a scan to see if I needed medical managment, to my and the sonographers suprise my DD was wiggling away, perfectly fine.

Sorry Docs are not being helpful have you tried calling your MW?

Sunny08 · 17/07/2012 10:42

Thank you. I was still under Dr's as they were worried about my hormone levels so they hadn't referred me to MW yet - I wish they had she was wonderful with my son and I'd feel much more comfortable.
I didn't even realise a EPU existed... I phoned them today.
I have had heavy bleeding since yesterday morning, pretty sure there is no way the little one is still in there.
Absolutely gutted but trying to be positive, even have come into work today but not getting much done, but better than wondering round the house feeling like an epic failure. I'm sorry I know that sounds selfish and lots of people go through this and worse, just the way I am feeling today. :-(

Failure doesnt come into it - you should be a bit kinder to yourself, youve been through a hell of a lot.

I hope the EPU have given you some good advice and that youre getting plenty of support in RL too Thanks

I'm so sorry you're going through this , be kind to yourself it is a big ordeal.

Thanks

sorry op xxxxxx

Mine lasted a good few hours with severe cramping and pain that was like a really awful period. It got a bit better with codeine and a lot of bed rest, you have tpo give it time and not do anything like heavy lifting etc. You should have quite a bit of clot-like lumps (sorry tmi) and heavy bleeding and not feel too brilliant, and it should last for about a week. If you develop a temperature or fever after a week go straight to GP as you may have an infection caused by any retained tissue. Sorry to be so blunt, just wanted to give you the facts, but otherwise take care of yourself and cry if you need to. Mine didn't hit me til a while afterwards as I was in shock when it happened, but let it out and lean on those around you.

lots of love and thoughts xxx

so sorry for your loss OP
I dont have much to add, i was told this morning that babys heartbeat had stopped on private dating scan. 10 weeks, saw a healthy heartbeat 2 weeks ago. Devastated.
EPU have been great with me. Scan shows no sign of my body preparing to lose pregnancy, no bleeding or pain, in fact just positive pregnancy symptoms which is harsh :(
I have been advised to wait for a week and see if my body recognises baby isnt growing and i may start to bleed naturally. If not i am booked to have D&c nxt tues.
Please dont feel a failure, let those who care for you support you in your loss. I understand how vulnerable you feel. I agree with stmoritz, i feel numb just now and it will hit me in depth later. please be kind to yourself and cry whenever. I broke my heart earlier and it helped a little xx
Love and best wishes to you xx
