12 week pregnant brown blood clots

Hi - new to this but wondered if anyone could help. I'm almost 12 weeks pregnant and for about 24 hours been having brown blood clots. Not really blood but pale brown discharge with thick brown clots. I spoke to the midwife and she said to come to hospital if no better in a couple of days. Should I be worrying about this or not? I'm terrified this is the beginning of a miscarriage. I didn't have any bleeding with my first little girl. Has anyone had any experience of this type of thing whether good or bad outcome? Thanks!

Brown blood is usually old blood. With a MC it is more common to have fresh red blood. Have you had a scan yet? I would get to EPU and demand one. In the meantime rest. I am surprised your MW did not tell you to have a scan. That is the only way of telling what is going on. I hope everything is ok .

Ps - I had brown blood for a week at 8 weeks and now have healthy girl. It was due to low progesterone and I was given tablets after they confirmed baby heartbeat et al ok.

Thanks SS&S. I have nuchal scan booked for Thursday next week. Midwife did say if it turned bright red to phone emergency line over weekend but if stays the same then ring on Monday. I'm don't know if I can wait the whole weekend if it carries on and tempted to go down there tomorrow. Not sure if I should be worrying so much though!

Well, have you had any scan yet?

Brown blood is old blood. So, could be from implantation / an areas of separation of the placenta or anything benign like that from a while ago.

It could be a miscarriage but I really hope its not.

I would call epu tomorrow if they're open or if not call your ooh mw.

Take care of yourself, I hope its nothing to worry about.

i had bleeding in pg in the past. found out it was due to a sensitive polyp that kept bleeding... nothing that harmed the baby. so i know it can be v scary if you don't know the reason

hi there
i first posted on mums net on tuesday last week as had brown bleeding, clots and mild period pain. I'd afriad i can't offer advice or wisdom as i'm in limbo waiting to find out what's going on so just wanted to say i'm thinking of you. i have rested and been near stationary all week and bleeding lessened and not had any more clotting. I had scan on thursday and they said development either slow or not developing, so waiting for scan next thursday to see if there is any development. sounds like these symptoms can be good or bad, there's no formula to second guess what's going on in there, this frustrates the hell out of me too!

i have been looking into private scans and having one done early next week, just feel like i would like a 2nd opinion in case they can detect a heart beat.

Could be a low lying placenta, i had this with 3rd ds at 19 wks, scred me terribly they sent me straight into hospital though no hanging about, if you have mat unit number give them a ring and they may tell you to go straight in and give you a scan as they did with me, no harm in phoning to put your mand at rest. Good luck
