smear test if I could be pregnant? Don't want another mc...

I am overdue my smear test (not sure how this happened - no one has contacted me for ages) and have one booked for Friday morning. I had a mmc at the end of Sept (thought I was 11.5 weeks, baby had died at 8 weeks) and had an ERPC.

Problem is, we are now ttc again, and Friday will be day 18 of my cycle, so in theory I could have conceived. Could a smear test cause another mc if I am pg? I really want to have it as I am not up to date, but equally don't want to risk anything if I am pg. Any advice gratefully received!

When I was due a smear test and in the very early stages of pregnancy I was advised to wait until after the baby was born. If you aren't pregnant then you will find out in a couple of weeks and could theoretically squeeze(!) in a smear test before conceiving next time. If you are pregnant then you would have to wait until baby was born anyway. So, in a nutshell, my advice would be to wait and see if you get a period this month, and then book a test, or not. Good luck!

Thanks - I'm just a bit worried cos I'm overdue a smear, and if I am pregnant and they tell me to wait then it will be nearly a year before I have one. Any other opinions anyone?

I'm probably too late to butt in here but I thought there was no point having a smear test just after pregnancy since there were normal changes to the cells of the cervix during pregnancy that could give a false positive on the smear test.

It won't cause an mc. American women get annual smears regardless of if they are pregnant or not and doing a smear in pregnancy seems to be routine there.
I had mine done this year and did get pregnant in that month, although by the dates it would seem mine was a couple of days before ovulation. If you are really worried re-book for next month but before cd14. However, if you are worried about it being overdue I would have it done anyway. at cd18 if you have conceived it won't have implanted yet and I doubt a 4 day fertilised egg in your fallopian tubes will influence the result of a smear.

I had one when 3 weeks pg (hoped I was but obv did not get BFP til later). Was reassured it would be completely safe if I was pg. Sadly I miscarried, however, the baby had seemingly grown until 8 weeks (miscarried at 11+3) so I imagine the two things were wholly unrelated (in fact I hadn't thought to consider my smear test as a factor until I read this). They really did try to reassure me it is non-invasive & 100% safe (and at any rate, much safe than undetected cervical abnormalities are when pg apparently).

I was due one whilst pg and they told me to wait until after.
