In really scared. Got back from the hospital today after passing my baby which died at 12wk. It looks bp though the baby had swelling indicating downs. In scared now that if I get pregnant again it will have downs. Does anyone know anything about this? Can u help me?

So sorry to hear about your loss. Please be assured that although the pain will never entirely go, it won't always hurt as much as it does now.

You don't mention your age but even for someone my age, 40, the risk of Down's is around 1:150. So, dependent upon your age, you don't have that much of a risk, hopefully. As far as I understand it, Down's is a random mutation, not something you would be predisposed to. It might happen again but probably won't. Why don't you contact the Down's Association to discuss it?

I really do believe that miscarriage is God's/Nature's way of preventing a child suffering. This is easy to say but I really do believe that. This baby must have had some major problems, perhaps with its heart as many Down's babies do. It will not suffer and you will not have to see it suffer.

Good luck. Soon you will have a beautiful, healthy child who will help you in your grief.

Rajj, so sorry for your loss.

DrSeuss is right, Downs Syndrome occurrence is generally a random mutation. Are they doing any tests on the baby for you? Karotyping will give you a better idea of future risk - ie. Whether it is a gene you carry or just random as is more common.

I can't post very well from my phone otherwise I would say more. I have been in a similar position to you. There are lots of lovely and helpful people on the antenatal tests and choices area of mumsnet under the pregnancy heading if you feel you need some support or have any questions.

Take care x
