Still feel a bit 'lost' after follow up scan at hospital

As some of you will know I found out last Thursday that my 11 week pregnancy was just an empty sac and miscarried naturally over the weekend (second M/C in a year). I have just got back from a follow up scan at the hospital where they confirmed that there was only a small bit of tissue left and it should expel over the next few days. I was then given a pregnancy test and told to take it in 2 weeks and phone them with the results (obviously just to ensure that HCG levels have gone back down). What do I do now? There was no advice on what happens next, no I'm sorry this has happened to you, no advice on investigations, no advice on what to do if I get pregnant again etc. I am not angry or bitter at all and the hospital staff were very good (I've only seen a sonographer & a nurse/nusre practioner no Doctor) I'm just left feeling a bit confused. Do I contact my own GP to discuss the future or should I just leave it and see what happens next time?

After my second mc I was unsure what to do, like you. I left it, but tbh having read a few things on here I'd go to my GP and ask if there is anything s/he can do in terms of tests themselves. After my 3rd mc my GP said that he'd refer me on and he'd do basic tests in the meantime. So there are some they can do - what they are I don't know as in the end I stayed under hospital care and was referred by them to the recurrent mc clinic.

But take heart in that you're still more likely to have a healthy pregnancy next time, it's not all doom and gloom.

There is a book you may find helpful (if you haven't read it already) by lesley Regan called Miscarriage: what every woman needs to know.

After my second mc (in Dec), the EPU gave me info on the miscarriage assoc, the counselling service etc. I saw the counsellor for the first time yesterday and she has referred me to the recurrent m/c clinic, even though my GP said I wasn't eligible.

I've found that (wrongly) they kind of assume you're ok, unless you show them otherwise or ask lots of questions about what next etc.

I'm sorry you didn't get more support - but definitely follow up with your GP and you could also try calling the EPU and explaining that you just want a bit of telephone advice re what next?

The thing with first miscarriages is that they are so common, healthcare providers seem to forget how devastating/confusing they are for those going through them.

And to be fair, there is nothing physically that needs doing, really, or can be done. Emotionally, obviously, support is good. The Miscarriage Association are good for that. But physically, they've done all they can do. They've done more follow-up than a lot of people get.

Remember that statistically you're still likely to go ahead and have a normal, healthy pregnancy next time. Good luck!
