Ectopic pregnancy whilst on Mirena Coil

I am 2 days into recovering from emergency surgery to remove an ectopic pregnancy. This has come as a big shock as I had a mirena coil in place. My reason for posting is to see if anyone else has had this experience with the mirena? I'm wondering if the stats are wrong or am I really just the unlucky 1 in 500 to fall pregnant? I guess thats a difficult one to answer but any feedback would be appreciated.

Oh I am so sorry. An ep is shocking enough even when you were ttc and knew you were pregnant.

I'd imagine there is another layer of shock if you had a coil - and the coil that all health professionals seem to rave about.

I believe that with any type of coil, the chance of an ep are heightened, but I could be wrong wrt the mirena.

I would recommend asking to speak to your GP about it and maybe pushing to see a specialist if they don't know much. It's bound to make you wary of various contraceptive choices after this.

Also be aware of the effect this kind of emergency treatment can have - mentally in the longer term as well as physically in the short term. Go really easy on yourself and try not to throw yourself back into things, eg work, too quickly even if you feel physically 'normal'. I am only just starting to feel less anxious over 4 months after my ep.

I was told that something like 1 in 200 users will get pregnant per year of use (and considering they are used for five years that means 1 in 50 over the course of five years I think).

And that 80% of pregnancies conceived on Mirena are ectopic. This is a shockingly high level.

I have a Mirena. I've completed my family so if I had to have an emergency removal of my ovaries it would not be a total disaster for me however it's a worry.
