Hi - Just started the menopause (42) and wondered if i can take the Pill as contraception or if anything else is more suitable?

Just met new partner after long term relationship where we coudl not have kids. New partner is able to have them and we need to make sure we don't ! LOL!

What does anyone else use? Would the Pill mess up my hormones further does anyone know?

CS xx

The menopause itself is not a reason for not being able to take the pill and it might be suitable for you if there are no other reasons. (reasons include smoking, high blood pressure, blood clots in the past among other things).

There are lots of other options aswell but what would be best for you depends on your situation, health and other factors and the best place to get individual advice is your GP or family planning clinic.

this is a good summary of the options available and the family planning association has some more information on each option here

You need to talk to your fr- the Pill is an option but you are having a premature meno at 42, ( some say under 45, others say under 40 is premature)so ideally you should be taking HRT to protect yourself from osteoporosis.

Can I ask how you know you are menopausal?

fr = Dr- sorry!

Has yr dr suggested HRT- you really should think about it as you are having a young meno and will be at risk from osteoporosis- sorry to sound all doom and gloom, but it is something I am aware of myself.
