Peri Periods..

Hi, first time starting a thread so.. be kind!
I’ve had heavy very regular periods since my teens and I was diagnosed with endometriosis early 20’s. Used the pill in my 20’s but didn’t get along with them. Had 2 children “late” through IUI.
My periods became unpredictable about a year ago and then stopped 7 months ago. Yesterday I wasn’t feeling good and I suddenly felt cramping and yep, a period.
So here’s my question: it’s insane! I’m bleeding through huge maxi pads every 30 mins. Gushing, clots, I’ve changed my trousers 4 times and managed to stain 2 chairs and the sofa. How normal is this during the peri stage? At what point do I seek medical attention? I’ve had flooding in the past but the only time I’ve ever bled like this was after my miscarriages.. and I’m pretty certain I’m not pregnant.
I’m a bit distressed and would appreciate advice. Thanks

I agree. You're losing too much blood.

eurochick · 15/10/2026 15:32

I’m in peri and have experienced prolonged heavy bleeding but not to the extent you are describing. I think you need to see a dr today.

Teenawilko · 15/10/2026 15:45

Wow ok! I thought I was overreacting! Thank you! DH is a Dr but he’s abroad in a different time zone and I don’t want to wake him up or worry him. Thanks all of you x

Bleeding through one pad in one hour for two consecutive pads is emergency level. Get someone else to drive you or take taxi. Drink plenty of water, eat crisps or salty food, to help your body hold onto the water. They can do emergency transvaginal ultrasound. Could be a fibroid. They should see you very soon. (That was my experience).111 told me to go to A&E. They can stop the bleeding or give you tranexamic acid. I know its very scary! All the best
Adrenaline and cortisol will be helping you "manage" this so just expect the exhaustion and crash afterwards.....

Thank you. Got old of DH who said exactly what you did! But he also sent me a prescription for tranexamic acid to take first to see if it reduces the bleeding and told me to wait 90 mins before getting up and going to a and e to give it chance to work. Thanks again everyone!

Didn't help @Teenawilko

Anyone recommend better pads for me? Started HRT and it seems to have increased periods which were heavy anyway due to copper coil. Tend to use a tampon and pad.

Try the tranexamic yourself.
A better branded pad..not uk so not sure of the brands

Tranexemic acid or progesterone tablets from the GP, and Always period pads in size 6 from Amazon plus tampons if you need them. The joys of peri periods that no-one warns you about.

These are the best I find, a bit chunky though so requires loose trousers. I also find period pants an absolute saver. Personally I’ve never had much luck with TXA.

I can’t cope with tampons since having my last child. I feel them and they bother me constantly. I generally use a cup which is a faff but works if I’m heavy but I still need a pad.
Regarding pads.. they make them longer now which helps at night I suppose - but it’s round the sides that is the issue.. when I leak it’s the area around the gusset, not the front or back. It’s been so bad these past few days that I’ve bled through everything onto my clothes. Can’t fkn wait for them to stop already.

Period pants definitely really help but I still leak round the sides. It’s been a nightmare.

@Teenawilko, how are you today?

Thanks. It’s still heavy but not as bad. I spoke to a nurse on the phone who told me to take a pregnancy test incase it was a miscarriage, but it’s not. The pills helped a little but I’m waiting it out another day. If I’m still bleeding through pads frequently tomorrow I’ll go to a&e. Just want periods to be behind me already.
