Help for menopause hip pain

I am 54, and have pain in both hips which wakes me up repeatedly during the night. I have no pain during the day.
I'm not quite sure where to start with the best supplements as the Internet recommends everything. Has anyone taken any supplements for this that have actually helped? Or any tips on how to manage it?

Are you on HRT? This is what resolved it for me.

funkystars123 · 30/09/2026 20:32

HRT and collagen helped me

I was on HRT for a couple of years but have stopped due to excessive bleeding. I had to have a couple of investigations/hysteroscopy procedures and there was nothing bad thankfully but the excessive bleeding was driving me mad so now I have been off HRT for 2 years and have the aching hips but no more bleeding!

is it outer hip pain? Sore to lay on it or if the upper hip crosses over too deeply? If so Google greater trochanteric pain syndrome to see if it fits symptoms. Get a good physio

Vitamin D - I walk my 2 dogs daily and was getting really grouchy with my hips especially when climbing over styles. It's made a huge difference. Most of us are deficient in it especially over winter months and it's a cheap supplement to take.

Strength training helped my back but HRT also helped

a coil might work better for the bleeding

Fatbadger50 · 30/09/2026 21:55

Watching, I have this too but in one hip. I am on HRT but it’s not really helped.

IllBiteYourLegsOff · 30/09/2026 22:09

HRT worked within days, for me. Then I had to stop taking it. I've since spent two years looking for the answer and for me it is taking very high dose omega 3 fish oil capsules at bed time. Didn't do anything if I took it in the morning. It's cheap and worth a try!

Sugar and nightshades are the triggers for my hip pain. I am on HRT as well.

Have you had an xray to check for osteoarthritis??
By your age, I’d had both hips replaced, so you’re not too young to follow up on this.

faferandom · 30/09/2026 22:22

Pilates and maybe also a memory foam mattress topper! Both have helped me!

It was GTP for me too - but I had a great physio and it's almost completely gone now.

It was hideous though, used to wake me multiple times a night.

Yoga or stretching really helps mine. I do a lot of walking and have an active job so i really need it. Mine had gone away for ages until this month! No Hrt.

Volterol gel calms the symptoms for me but not the cause:

Mirroredclock · 30/09/2026 22:55

My GP didn’t believe me, poured scorn on any supplements and I’m exhausted from hip pain affecting my sleep

Humdingergum · 30/09/2026 23:16

If you can afford it then private physio.

trainedopossum · 30/09/2026 23:24

I sleep with a U-shaped pregnancy pillow (two ordinary pillows will work) with one bit behind my bum and the other between my knees. It takes pressure off the hip underneath and keeps my legs parallel so the top leg doesn’t hang.
Also pigeon stretch and sometimes a tennis ball (or foam roller if you can stand it) to really get into the joint.

SinuousTendrils · 30/09/2026 23:24

I had the same for a couple of years.
Started weight lifting and the pain has gone.
