Prolonged heavy period

I am 53 (54 in October) and until recently I have been having quite regular periods. Last month I started spotting a week after my period stopped and continued spotting for about 3 weeks with no heavy bleeding at all. I then had spotting a month later which developed into what I thought was a regular period. This became very heavy with clots a few days in but I thought ‘ride it out, it will stop in a day or so’ but this wasn’t the case as I have continued to bleed for over 2 weeks now. 😩

I spoke to a doctor on the telephone last week and she pretty much told me that most people aren’t even having periods at my age and not to worry about it. It is now a week later and I am still bleeding. I am planning to do another e consult today but am away for a few days so can’t get to the doctors until Friday morning. It is ruining my break and this constant bleeding is really getting me down as I feel it will never stop. Has anyone had anything similar? I am not on HRT or birth control

Thank you both. It is at a scanning centre so I am hoping they will talk me through it a bit. I just want to know what’s happening but am anxious at the same time.

yes it was, I had a hysteroscopic myomectomy. Prior to this I’d had a transvaginal scan and the sonographer put me at ease and talked me through what she could see (fibroid or polyp and thickened womb lining), then a couple of weeks later I had a hysteroscopy by a consultant. Following this about 3 weeks later I had the myomectomy. Hope goes well for you

Just had the scan. Have 2 cysts on my right ovary, fibroids and they can’t rule out endometriosis. I am to be scanned again in 6 weeks apparently

I hope you feel a little better now you’ve had the scan? and hopefully you are on track to get sorted out now. I found your thread this morning and it has been helpful as I’m having very similar problems and have been referred for an urgent scan on Tuesday. Was your scan nhs? I hope I have some news on the day also 😌

I am sorry you are also going through this @slightlyanxious7 It starts to really get you down doesn’t it? Are you having the prolonged heavy bleeding?
I hope to hear from the doctor soon with a plan as I can’t go on like this much longer. The bleeding has thankfully reduced on the tablets but I fear it will ramp up again if I stop them, and it hasn’t stopped the stomach cramping and discomfort.
I hope all goes ok with your scan on Tuesday and you get some answers. Mine was NHS but in a private scan centre.

Thank you yes it is definitely starting to get me down. I’ve had the prolonged bleeding for 6 weeks although it’s been more steady than heavy. Like you I’ve tried the tranexamic acid and it works but as soon as I stop them it continues.
i hope you get a plan from your doctor soon. My doctor is going to prescribe the progesterone pill but wanted the scan doing first, hopefully something like the pill will be offered to you to regulate your bleeding whilst you wait for your next scan.

Wow 6 weeks of bleeding. No wonder it is getting you down. It literally feels like it will never stop doesn’t it? 😞

Hello, I had my scan today and I have thickened womb lining so will now wait for a GP appointment. How are you now@pinkchampagne1?

Did they talk it through with you? I hope you feel a little better for having some answers.
My period is now very light spotting so I hope it is going to stop completely soon. I am no longer taking the medication.

Best of luck op. I really hope it's all calmed down and doesn't return. I had the same thing happen last year. Sudden prolonged period with terrible pain and awful clots. It was fibroids. It's been a long 17 months with ultrasounds, MRIs, hysteroscopies, biopsies. I tried all sorts including tranexamic acid, the coil, progesterone only pill, Zoladex to switch off all hormones. The only thing which worked was norethisterone but not completely. It only reduced things and there were still times when I haemorrhaged and ended up in hospital. The biggest fibroid was mango sized, two were the size of tennis balls and I had dozens of smaller ones.

After 14 months of continuous bleeding, I had a hysterectomy a few weeks ago. What a bloody relief. Fibroids are hormone fed so hopefully they will resolve in the near future.

Goodness, you poor thing. Sounds like you have really been through it. 😞 I hope you feel better after your hysterectomy.

I went to the doctor yesterday. She explained that I have fibroids, these 2 cysts and adenomyosis, which I hadn’t heard of before. Apparently this explains the heavy bleeding.
I am to have bloods soon and a repeat scan in 6 weeks. For now she has just prescribed me more of the tranexamic acid.

It has been a stressful week as we lost my FIL on Tuesday. I feel beyond shattered.
