Pelvis and hip issues

Is this a menopause thing? My pelvis and hips have got incredibly stiff and after any time at all sitting down I stumble around painfully to get started again. Started perimenopause early 40s. Now late 50s and not been on HRT for 4 years now (advice from breast clinic).

got a physio appointment soon, I’m reasonably fit, could do with losing a stone. Do Pilates once a week…

Im 44 and have developed labral tear in my hip, no physical reason for it, no injury my doctor thinks its just age and wear and tear.

You don't have FAI? I have labral fraying and some small tears, but that's as a result of a mild hip impingement. I thought labral tears were a hallmark of FAI.

It feels like stiffness and pinching pain in the front of groin area. It can get really quite painful.

Have you had breast cancer or are you at risk @PatioDwellers ?
Is HRT completely off limits for you?

What you're describing sounds like typical arthritis - moving a lot and things like yoga and Pilates can help. You should ask for an x ray of your hips to see what's going on. Hopefully your physio can help with exercises to stop it getting worse.

If your periods stopped long before 50 you should also have a bone density scan to ensure you don't have osteoporosis. It's symptom-less but early menopause is a main risk factor.

They wont do an MRI to look deeper. I do have something called coxa profunda which is abnormal deep hip sockets. Im doing physio then injections and then surgery. I cant walk more than 30 mins before my leg locks.

Just a thought if you're in the UK, OP: I'm in my 30s and have developed soft tissue hip problems in the heatwave. Basically, far too much time sitting on the floor (because sofas were too hot!), lying differently in bed (because heat) and skipping my normal workouts (too hot!) meant that the loading on my hips got too much. It's taking weeks to heal. So if you're not sure if your issues are joint problems or muscle/tendon, just something else to consider?

Try somatic yin yoga.. it teaches your muscles and ligaments to work properly. Very relaxing, and really works for my stiff hips and neck. Which are all in tune with each other. There’s quite a few on you tube to follow.

God that sounds awful, I'm sorry.

I have found much improvement from weights in a more limited range of movement, much more improvement than pilates style exercise and flexibility.

Sometimes building up the muscles around the hips and pelvis is needed to better support stiff joints rather than trying to improve range of movement to reduce stiffness.

I had terrible hip pain for a few years. A bit of googling suggested oestrogen depletion in peri menopause can cause hip pain. I started taking collagen for hair and nails and was gobsmacked to discover that within 4 weeks of starting it, my pain resolved completely. Whilst this is anecdotal I can say with some conviction that nothing else had changed. I honestly thought I'd live with hip pain indefinitely so this was a massive but happy shock to me

Cazziebo · 30/08/2026 11:57

I had hip and knee pain as well as sore feet. I saw a podiatrist who recommended custom insoles - and fit flops at home rather than bare feet. She told me one leg was 3mm shorter than the other and the resultant uneven gait was causing the pain.

Remarkable difference very quickly. I’ve since been diagnosed with osteoporosis so that might have been another factor.

Tiggermad · 01/09/2026 20:37

Is it only pain when moving or lying still. I have pain left hip and leg without movement.

PatioDwellers · 03/09/2026 14:33

@JinglingSpringbells just got the X-ray results back. It is arthritis and a bit of extra bone growth in the hip joint. Just a bit not much.

Ive got physio booked and some exercises to do until then…hey ho.

Ive not had a dexa scan as though perimenopause started young I don’t think menopause kicked in until my 50s. But I could probably ask for one.

Have you ever been a runner? I used to run for fitness for years and now in my 50’s my hips are paying for it. Nothing to do with hormones (I’m on HRT and take collagen), it’s the ball and socket joint at the top of my thigh.
