Topical oestrogen and sex (with a man)

I assume that, like the systemic oestrogen gel, there's a waiting period between application and allowing a man to touch the area. How long is it?

I have read this somewhere, I think it’s relatively harmless to the man but you would definitely apply before sleep after sex, I would think leave it overnight and ideally till the following evening. So no morning sex?! I’m no expert but this is what I’d do.

tourdefrance · 07/08/2026 09:43

I was told to apply in the morning rather than just before bed. DP gets up early so I apply after he's left (and have another 5 minutes reading while it dries).

Do you mean vaginal estrogen? (Not Estrogel.)

Touching with hands etc?
There is no waiting time. I asked my consultant this almost 20 years ago.

He said it is not absorbed in any meaningful quantity by men. It is a minute amount of estrogen. (100 applications = 1 day of Estrogel approx.)
However he did say that for women it's better to insert the cream after sex rather than before, simply because otherwise it won't be absorbed very well. (and it's not the same as a lubricant.)

Vaginal oestorgen, yes. Touching with ... well, yes also hands but I was thinking more of everything else.

So it sounds as if applying at the same time as the oestrogel (just before breakfast) would work. Good. Not adding yet another complication to the meds and supplements schedule.

Thank you.

Are you inserting the cream or applying it externally? Or both?

If you are using it internally, it does work better it used at bedtime, simply because gravity means it may slip down during the day before it's had time to be absorbed.

If you are smearing it on externally, you can do that any time.

EnoughPlayingNice · 07/08/2026 11:48

At the moment I'm still at the 'thinking about getting some' stage, so not actually applying it anywhere. All info is useful.

I was told by my consultant not to use it before sex.

I’m in a fairly new relationship (after years of being single) so this having to work out when to take my HRT because of potential spontaneous sex is a whole new baffling world. 🙄I’ve worked out that for me (so far) the best time to take anything vaginally is a little later in the morning after showering etc so after any morning sex has happened.

I never realised a middle aged relationship could be some complicated 😂. On the plus side, there’s no worries about pregnancy.

EnoughPlayingNice · 07/08/2026 13:21

Yes the between-shower-and-lunch window seems the best option, provided that's a long enough gap. I'll just have to do some yoga to counteract the gravity problem.

You really really don't need to worry about gravity!

Its cream. That's like saying my excema cream will run off my hand if I don't lie down flat once it's on!

I've shoved some in at all times of the day. It still works

The leaflet with the instructions does say use at night (for reasons already posted.)

Maybe we are all different, but if I've used to at other times, it does ooze out over the day rather than staying in place. Sorry for TMI!

@EnoughPlayingNice You don't need worry. It's only used around 2 x a week anyway, so you can plan around that, or just use it afterwards.

Doodledoggle · 07/08/2026 18:41

@JinglingSpringbells ha ha. Once you start talking about vaginal cream, I dont think it's possible to be TMI 😂

Mine doesn't run out or off. I rub it into my labia and put a big blob on my fingers and smear it around inside. Appreciate that might feel different if you're using the applicator.

EnoughPlayingNice · 07/08/2026 19:35

Seems there are multiple options, so I'll try out a few and see what works best.

😀

Yes, the applicator reaches high (I lie down to do it) so it really is a 'blob' of cream. It does ooze out the next morning but I think a lot has been absorbed by then anyway. I've used to daytime too and I notice quite a lot has come down within a couple of hours.

Having said that, everyone is different.
