Heavy bleeding after missed progesterone on HRT, has anyone experienced this?

I've been on HRT for 6 months, all going well but I missed taking progesterone recently and experienced light bleeding which settled down after a few days...however bleeding has now restarted and much heavier. Quite a shock after such a long time of no periods.

From research it seems to be the balance isn't right. I will contact my GP but has anyone experienced this? Will I be able to continue HRT, and will the dose of Progesterone 100mg need to change?

You are bleeding because your uterine lining has been stimulated by the oestrogen and you are only 6 months out from your last period. Have you now taken your progesterone ?

I haven't had a period for 2 years, as I'm 55, been on HRT for 6 months. Missed progesterone but have now taken progesterone regularly for a few weeks, not missed any dose but have just experienced bleeding.

I'll contact my Dr as I know unexplained bleeding has to be investigated just disappointed as HRT seemed to be working and I was finally seeing the benefits.

Sounds like you’re taking 100mg progesterone daily, ie continuous? How many days did you miss? Your current bleed could still be as a result of missing doses and your womb lining isn’t yet resettled.

I suspect all that will happen is your GP sends you for a scan to check all is well with your uterus.

It’s right that post meno bleeding needs to be investigated. I am not a dr but if it happened to me, I wouldn’t class this as ‘unexplained’ exactly, because I think stopping the progesterone is the explanation!

But do discuss with GP.

I have had this - I missed around 3 days. It was a big shock! I went to the doctors and was referred for a scan - all was fine. Since then I’ve been v careful to take it regularly. Not had any recurrences, not had to change my dosage.

How many days or weeks did you miss?
Missing it for a day or two won't cause that much bleeding- maybe a bit of spotting. But if you missed it for weeks, that's different.

What dose of estrogen are you on?

Some women need to double the amount of progesterone to 200mgs a day to control the womb lining/

There is no reason from what you've said why you can't carry on with hrt but see your GP for a eview.

Just get it checked out at your doctor's. If you were in perimenopause, bleeding when you missed your progesterone wouldn't be too strange, but if you haven't had a period in two years then you are officially in menopause and that's more worrying.

I had this when I misunderstood the dose of progesterone I was supposed to be taking and only took 1 tablet rather than 2. I was a little bit younger though (52) if that makes a difference.

im in Peri and still get light periods. Im also on mounjaro for 7weeks and haven’t had a period since starting. I’ve been on HRT for 4 years and now on 100mg plus oestrogen patches.

Ive just been away for a few days and missed progesterone. Yesterday I felt awful all day - very tired, very down, very heavy unexpected period in a very stressful situation. Got back to a social situation and I was struggling to cope so decided wine was a good idea to energise myself - and almost had a meltdown, completely lost it and didn’t feel myself at all for a few hours. I still can’t sleep my mind is weird!

I’ve had one other time I missed tablets and similar again - had a very stressful work situation that i couldn’t cope with then a horrible migraine a couple of days later

Hope you are ok. I wonder if some people are more sensitive to missed doses

Sorry have realised yours is a different situation - my brain really isn’t working well right now!
