Stiff achy lower back/hips in the morning?

Every morning I wake up with an achy stiff lower back & hips. Sometimes it radiates down my legs, usually the right one. It can be quitr painful but as soon as I move it wears off, although my right hip often feels a bit stiff but not enough to affect my day. Similar happens if I sit too long on the sofa with my legs curled up to the side. I'm able to exercise 4 times a week with no problems and am very active. I started HRT (2 pumps oestrogen) about 4 months ago and if anything it's worse since then, I think because I now sleep through the night instead of moving around tossing & turning like before. I also take menopace and have tried one of those pillows for side sleepers but it makes little difference. I did injure my back in an exercise class a couple of years ago which is when it started and although I recovered quickly I do occasionally "put it out", one time when bending down cleaning the bathroom, another time when getting down awkwardly from a bar stool. I'm 59 so wondered if this is just part & parcel of aging. Anyone else?

You are not alone.

Radiating down the leg indicates a nerve problem (possibly the sciatic) - it's being pinched by something.

I've had it previously and been sorted with physio, but the current bout is more widespread and isn't going away. Sleep, slow walking, standing still too long all set it off.

I had this for a while, and my back would also ‘go’ from time to time. Physio helped short term, but losing some weight and walking for 40 mins every day has helped the most. Also a new mattress.

Sciatica? It’s agony.

Geminijust · 14/06/2026 09:57

I thought sciatica initially but I thought it only affected 1 side, this is both but worse whatever side I've been lying on. The right is definitely worse and it's only the right leg when it radiates - that doesn't happen often though. I wouldn't describe it as agony and it usually goes once I change position.

Try collagen in your coffee every morning - really helped with my early morning stiffness and aches and pains

Tendonitis? I have it everywhere since peri started. Physio could help. Your symptoms sound a bit like gluteal tendonitis
