HRT and Anxiety Spikes

LlamaBasket · 02/06/2026 17:36

Started HRT 9 weeks ago.
Mirena Coil and Oestrogel 2 pumps.

About 10 days ago my anxiety went mad. Literal panic attacks. Feeling tight chested all of the time. Brain ached. Nauseas with it. No appetite. Absolutely crazy.

Im wondering did anyone else experience similar starting HRT?

I had horrible anxiety on HRT and it didn't subside with time, just got worse. I had to stop taking it. Feel much better without it.

Yes sort of: I had spikes in my HR so had ”physical” anxiety symptoms which drove me nuts and created actual anxiety. I nearly stopped but was persuaded to keep going to see if it would settle down and it did and I am so glad now I am on HRT. (It took me three attempts though before being able to push through the anxiety wall.) Took 2-3 months for it to settle down. Speak to your GP.

I had this on the gel. Switched to patches and I'm fine.

@LlamaBasket Try reducing the gel to 1 pump.

It's often not something GPs suggest- they go in with the full /medium dose.

My consultant started me on 1/2 pump, working upwards until I got symptom relief , over a few weeks. Eventually I went up to 2 pumps but I wouldn't advise anyone to start on that dose.

I put 1 pump on this morning, so I’ll see how that goes over a few days. Thank you for the suggestion.
