If you had dreadful hot flushes and night sweats, did they just stop one day?

Because finally mine seem to have done (and it’s coincided with my totally regular periods skipping 2 cycles).

If this happened to you, did they ever come back? I am seriously hoping that they are gone forever as they were absolutely horrific!

I’m over 15 years post menopause. I no longer get hot flushes( can’t actually remember when they stopped),but I still get terrible night sweats. I can wake up dripping in sweat and need to change my pyjama top.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 03/05/2026 20:29

Mine stopped the day I started taking combined hrt. Specifically the progesterone seemed to knock them on the head.

Crwysmam · 03/05/2026 20:35

I only had mild hot flushes. Post meno I get the occasional one but I’m on Anastrazole for breast cancer and I’ve noticed I often have a brief flush about an hour after taking the drug which presumably is when the drug hits my system and drops my estrogen level.
If I do experience them they last seconds rather than minutes and are not in the least debilitating.
I experience the odd night sweat but usually because we’ve left the heating on accidentally or the dog, who sleeps on my bed, snuggles up.
I do sleep better now, although have the odd night where I can’t drop off. The solution is to read my book which I normally manage two or three pages before dropping off.

Now I’m retired disturbed sleep is less of a problem since I can catch up during the day if I need to.

@aintnospringchickensorry to hear you are still getting them

@Crwysmamthe dog or dp were also making me hot!

@ConstantlyFuriosaglad it fixed them for you!

mine were so hideous - they would trigger migraines in me too. I’m just keeping everything crossed that they don’t come back (I’m 53 so hopefully that’s it)

I only really started to get bad hot flushes once my periods stopped.

I hardly had any peri symptoms, postmenopausal has been much harder

boingboings · 03/05/2026 22:25

I am peri and had night sweats but suddenly they stopped. I wonder when or if they come back. My periods are still quite regular.
my friend had who is in peri as well had hot flushed during the day but they as well disappeared suddenly. We are both 50.

Booooooooom · 04/05/2026 11:24

fingers crossed @boingboings

sorry to hear that @SmallBlondeMum

i read that they stop when your body gets used to the lower levels of oestrogen and stops reacting to the levels fluctuating. But I guess no one knows exactly when that will be.

My mum's still getting hot flushes, and she's 25 years into menopause.

JinglingSpringbells · 04/05/2026 16:39

You get flushes when your estrogen levels drop.

You body doesn't 'get used to it' which is why longer term diseases like osteoporosis start. Flushes etc can stop but don't always.

I had no peri symptoms but when my periods stopped I got flushes etc.

I'm almost 20 years post meno. I've had two trials of stopping HRT and my symptoms are still there.

My Mum had flushes into her 80s.

StarCourt · 04/05/2026 23:16

My mum is 79 and still gets hot flushes and night sweats all the time. I’m 59 and the same

Booooooooom · 05/05/2026 09:54

Sorry to hear that @StarCourt - I’ve still not had another and at one point I was getting them every other hour so it feels like a massive relief
