Has progesterone only helped anyone with perimenopause anxiety and panic?

Hi Ladies I believe I've hit perimenopause at 44. So I want to talk progesterone
So last year out of nowhere my anxiety sky rocketed so much so I had panic attacks and was diagnosed with anxiety disorder. Yes I was stressed but I believe peri is here too. When I ovulate I feel awful. Panick and anxiety on period. Brain fog, feeling over stimulated alot like I can't be on my phone to much etc..
I tried hrt patch but the estrogen made me feel worse. Also the gel did too. I keep getting told about trying progesterone only and was looking at bio identical or maybe even the slynd mini pill. My periods are still regular & light but the mental side is awful

All I can tell you is that I'm an incredibly anxious person but when I was pregnant, the high levels of progesterone levelled me out so much that I was basically a different person. I'd definitely try it if I were you.

Progesterone seems to be like marmite. I have had cyclogest for many years and love it.

I cant do progestegenes in the mini pill

Thanks @Grammarninja
I think looking at my bloods my estrogen is okay & spikes but progesterone lower.
I'm still ovulating as the pains are awful and I feel awful in my head then too. My periods are so horrible mentally now, yet bleeding is light and periods short. So annoying being a women xx

Hi @dennydan
Yes so I hear! I must try it. I have body identical in the cupboard. I believe I'd need it all month as feel so up & down. Was you suffering anxiety? Its the nighttime surges, dry mouth and feeling awful. Periods still very regular. Definitely ovulating too but estrogen was hard-core lol

I know! Get on the progesterone. It's worth a try at least. Hope you feel better soon. There's nothing worse than anxiety!

Ah right! Just interested as I'm in a similar position. I'm currently on lowest dose of estrogel and 100 mg utragestan daily. I'm very similar to you in that I believe the progesterone is the key to alleviating anxiety. When I started on a higher dose of oestrogen my anxiety was off the charts - awful jittery feeling. I'm wondering whether to drop the oestrogen and just continue the progesterone but bit worried that it's not standard advice!

Hey @TwitterRatti
I've spoken to sooo many ladies through forums who take the progesterone route only. To be honest if you've got the pills why not as part of you're regime & apparently there's no harm in it. Apparently if you see a meno specialist and they believe all you need is Progest there happy for you to have alone. I tried the patch but couldn't get past the estrogen bit, then tried the tiny bit of gel & made me so jittery & wired plus panicky so I gave up..
How old are you? What are you symptoms? I'm 45 this year and I dont really have any symptoms apart from anxiety, panick & brain fog..
Periods very regular and actually shorter and lighter but hate it when it arrives as feel awful, ovulation hits hard too!

Thanks for the info, I definitely think it's something I could consider. I'm late forties, but think I've been in peri for at least five years. Main problems are mental - insomnia, anxiety, panic attacks, feeling wired. Think I will talk to my gp and ask about this or the mini pill. My theory is that I have really high oestrogen levels or they're spiking high at different points in my cycle and me adding more is counter productive. I must admit the progesterone is lovely and calming. Doesn't help with sleep for me, but mood is definitely better in it so far - it's been three months. I'm just not convinced I need the gel . I might just experiment the next cycle and see how I go! Good luck OP, anxiety is life destroying.

Cbpoppy · 17/04/2026 18:56

@TwitterRatti
Yes you sound very similar to me. To be honest I have a low dose of amitriptyline and I sleep well so maybe without it I'd be the same, apart from the annoying surges or panic waking me up..
Estrogen spikes in peri so I think thats why ovulation can be growling.. I had bloods and my E was good but my P was on the lower end..
I'm gonna bite the bullet & try these pills if I can shift anxiety I'll be a happy lady!!
