Mirena Coil and side effects? How quickly did they settle for you?

Just had mirena coil fitted in the hope that it sorts out heavy period.
So far feeling more anxious, raise heart rate, irritability, insomnia.
I feel a bit a down as this is such a hard time of the year as it is with and now i’m regretting getting it done.
How quickly did these side effects settle for you?

Side effects including a longer period lasted around two months for me the first time, but ever since I have had no bleeding and only good things to say! Even my second insertion was fine afterwards.

I’ve had it inserted after giving birth but I don’t have any of these symptoms. Had two periods already but they were very very light. Usually I have very heavy periods, cramps etc. Maybe the side effects will appear in the future. I don’t know. It will be 3 months since I’ve had it inserted. However it’s not Mirena brand coil I have, it’s under a different brand name though hormonal.

It didn’t
so I had removed at 6 months
never again

IAmKerplunk · 28/01/2026 08:53

4-5 months of on and off bleeding, cramps, tense, and just ‘off’. Then literally one day it all stopped and I kept it in issue free (and period free) for 5 years
and loved it.

I had mine fitted in September due to low iron caused by heavy periods . The first 2 months were all most constant bleeding on and off. Then every 2 weeks and i was ready to take it out myself. But it has settled now and I’ve had nothing in 6 weeks so I’m hoping it’s now settled.

same! Made it to 11 months of being told it would settle down before it thankfully bled itself out.

Rosegarden12 · 28/01/2026 09:36

I had a little light bleeding after having it done and then no bleeding or periods since. I’ve had two, and the same with both. Would definitely recommend based on my experience, but can see from this thread people’s experiences are completely different. Hope it settles down for you.

I was first given a Mirena 25 years ago as part of a hospital trial - I was deemed too young at 30 for a hysterectomy (due to c section scarring and surgical adhesions). I can honestly say I've never had an issue with them apart from initial cramping after insertion. I'm now 55 and still have one - have them changed every 5 years like clockwork and will do until menopause finally arrives and relieves me of the horror. However, my DD had one fitted and had nothing but issues for nearly a year until she had it removed. I honestly think it's luck and body chemistry.

I used a Marina because I had endometriosis and really had to not have periods at all. It settled down after 3 months, less for my subsequent Marinas (I had three in total over fifteen years).

I don't think I had any of these effects. Are you certain they are related to your Mirena? Could they be down to something else?

Sunisshiningagain · 28/01/2026 19:28

Thank you everyone. I feel exactly how i feel before period. All the pms symptoms. Not been able to sleep which then starts a big ball other issues. I was fine before it was inserted but now feel on the edge.
The funny thing is i had a tiny bit of bleed the same night and apart from cramping, its stopped so just seems like a psychological side of things

Had mine and persisted for over a year, it never settled down, I was so low and tearful, very bloated and bleeding on and off all the time! I had it taken out ( had to really demand that, my health care provider were ridiculously reluctant to remove it) but was later told it’s not for everyone!

LaundryScales · 28/01/2026 19:37

I’m on my 4 th and have never had any side effects. You might just be experiencing some natural anxiety about this change, give yourself a wee but of time for things to settle down.

GiantTeddyIsTired · 28/01/2026 19:42

I've had mine 2 weeks (had ablation at the same time). I had a light ache the first day, then a week later very slight spotting (very watery) and a small ache (not enough to even bother with paracetamol.

I've taken it very easy - no strenuous exercise, and I've not had any issues with heart-rate/mood/motivation - but then compared to the 3 day, 350ml in 12 hours periods I'd been having I think it would take a very big effect for me to feel low about it - I'm curious to see what happens when my next period is due. I've been mood tracking to see.

Funfuntimes12 · 04/02/2026 21:48

I rode out the anxiety for 2 months it was horrible but did it, unfortunately I couldn’t get rid of the thrush that I ended up getting constantly. I had it removed last Monday and I think things are starting to resolve. I’m on utrogestan 1 at night. Was scared to change to it but I felt so ill with my coil I was considering stopping all my HRT. One of the worst experiences I’ve had. Never again. My doctor said they are great for some women and not for others. You just never know.

Same - I was keen for it to work, and was assured it would be fine even though I hadn't ever had kids or been pregnant...

I think 18 months of constant cramping and blood loss, anxiety and low mood (no wonder, always in pain), was told to keep waiting, it would settle down, it was in my head... they threw various drugs at it... When they finally agreed to remove it, it was already half out, my body had been trying to expel it... 🙄

Wickersloth · 04/02/2026 22:11

I was properly crampy for a few days, then in discomfort for a couple of weeks. A couple of months of on/off bleeding - first a proper period, then lighter bleeding on and off, accompanied by bloating. Then no bleeding at all. I think the bloating has gone too, although I seem to have put on at least a couple of kg. But that might be due to having started estrogen patches a few months beforehand.
Mentally I don't think it has affected me as I was ok for a couple of months after having the coil put in. Since about Christmas I am feeling tense and not myself but I think that's either the estrogen or constantly being hungry due to the diet I'm now on!
