Help please! Breast swelling and soreness on HRT?

I've been on Oestrogel (two pumps) and two progesterone tablets for 14 days now. I'm finding my breasts are swelling and sore! Heavy too. I really don't want this, as I'm already overweight.

I'm starting some weight loss dieting (old fashioned way). Is this breast swelling normal, is it likely to stop or keep going? Perhaps I should ask the GP to half my HRT dose?

The good news is that the hot flushes are already much reduced on the HRT. Just not sure about the breast swelling, it's very uncomfortable.

Thanks, yes I can reduce to one pump of oestrogen gel. I was hoping to reduce from 2x100mg progesterone tablets to one as well. Sounds like that's not usual though.

Why 200mg Utrogeston every day? Normal dose is 100 for 25 days out of every calendar month , with a week to bleed, or 200mg for 12 days out of every calendar month.

@Christwosheds I'm on 200mg for 14 days of the month for progesterone. I was on two pumps of oestrogel but have reduced to one due to the breast symptoms.

The breast swelling and pain goes in about 2-3 months. So you can stay on one pump til breast symptoms ease, then go to 1.5 and wait again, then go to 2 if you need better symptom control

@ForCraftyWriter thanks so much! Does the size return to pre HRT after two to three months as well? I have ordered new bras one size up as I think the bulging wasn't helping the pain.

@modernminimalist why have you been given utrogestan AND a mirena coil?
The Mirena is the progesterone part of HRT- it thins the womb lining.

You don't need both because even though a Mirena is in situ in the womb, the hormone in it still gets into the blood stream and will help endo.

Endometriosis. I had the mirena in during my lap in May and gynae have advised I have to have progesterone on top of the mirena as my endo is so severe because of the risk of the oestrogen flaring it again

I had the same at the start, but it does stop with time.

Yes goes back to normal. Was totally excruciating for me but it all went away. Might go quicker if you just stay on the 50 dose?

Thanks for all the experience and comments! So in general is the increase in cup size that women comment on more related to general weight gain? I'm trying to lose a couple of pounds a week, I dont mind a small size increase but I'm a bit terrified I could end up several sizes bigger.

I used evening primrose oil for a few months which helped. Then stopped and it had settled down/didn’t come back.

I am just about to increase to evorel 75mg now and have the EPO ready to go if needed.

Hi, I have been on about a year and the breaSt pain went after about 8 weeks. The growth stopped too, I am now a fuller D cup rather than before when I was a barely there D cup! They didn't continue to grow

I’ve been on HRT (3 pumps of oestrogel, Mirena and testosterone gel) for over 2yrs now and for me it settled down after a few weeks. Same again when I increased from 2 to 3 pumps.

It has been wonderful for my mood which was the main challenge. I’ve had no periods and barely any cycle noticeable since I got my Mirena.

Weirdly though I have started having breast soreness this week. Nothing else has changed except this week being January I have started eating better, reducing calorie intake and walking more… I have no idea if there is any correlation!

I'm on 2 pumps, daily progesterone all month (one tablet) and still on depo injection which I think accounts for the continuous progesterone tablet (also 39 but well into peri by both symptoms and family history). Started September 2025.

My boobs were so sore the first few weeks I nearly came off it again, but everything else except crying a lot was so much better I persevered and the boob pain / swelling / nipple tenderness did disappear within the first month. My usual bras still fit so am hopeful this means you won't go up a size!

They don’t recommend only 25 days now. It is either 200mg for 12 days of peri or 100mg every day with out a break if post x
