HRT if you couldn’t take the combined pill

Hi,

I am considering trying HRT. I’m generally not too bad but have some symptoms that could be better and as per another post, I’m experiencing a loss of sensation when having sex.

My query is that I was never able to tolerate the combined pill when I was younger. It used to make me projectile vomit. Is it likely that HRT will have a similar effect?

I’ve been looking at the side effects of the vaginal oestrogen cream, which I was considering even if I don’t go for the full HRT, and they mention nausea and vomiting so I just wanted to gauge whether it’s likely.

Thank you.

Hmm that's strange about the vaginal cream having that side effect - it's not supposed to be systemic.

I never got on with the combined pill either - it didn't make me sick but other side effects - I have had some of these on systemic HRT so have come off it but have kept on with the cream and am finding it fine.

I can't take the combined pill or HRT due to medical issues.

I do tolerate the mini pill absolutely fine though and has definitely helped with things like hot flushes. If you are still having regular periods then HRT isn't really recommended.

Why isn’t HRT recommended with regular periods? I thought it was recommended if you had symptoms that you needed help with?

Yeah, I don't think that's correct!

I had intolerance to some types of pill, but been fine with HRT.

In fact, I got contra indicated for combined pill age 35 due to migraines. HRT has cured the migraines!

The cream isn't really even HRT as such. It gave me thrush, but I'd be surprised if it made you sick (though, I had a pessary for piles that gave me horrendous headaches, so I guess everything is linked somehow!).

I'm 65. Mirena coil plus 1mg oestrogen tablet per day.

Micronized progesterone plus estradiol gel — estrogen goes straight through skin into bloodstream.

I cant take HRT due to blood clots so I have mirena coil for progesterone and estrogen gel which I rub into my legs. Seem to be working OK so far but need to get coil replaced next year as it will be 5 years old
