Period not stopping/HRT

Any experience of this? Normally have a very small bleed, but occasionally have a ‘proper’ period. This month my period hasn’t stopped - I am on day 12. It isn’t heavy at all now, but seems to have a very long ‘tail’ on it.

Spoke to doc today who is arranging an ultrasound. I am 50, 3.5 years on Everol 75 and sequential Utrogestan (200mg) for two weeks of the month.

Anyone had anything similar?

The advice from the British Menopause Society on this is to adjust the HRT. Your GP ought to follow this.

For 75mcg patch, the guidance is that you should try increasing the progesterone to 300mgs x 14 days.

It's unlikely there is anything wrong but the high dose of estrogen needs more progesterone to thin the womb lining.

Maybe go back and speak to your GP and ask if they had read the guidance on Endometrial Protection with HRT from the BMS and will change your dose.

The guide is online and you can read it too.

If your scan shows no issues then you will still need to consider the dosage change. You should also try to have the scan straight after a bleed so the lining is at its thinnest. You could tweak your cycle to do this once you get the date by having a shorter cycle (using progesterone earlier) so the bleed is over and you're round about days 5-7 of the cycle.

All the best!

In case anyone finds this, period ended up stopping after three weeks. In the end it felt like two separate periods, back to back, that went on for ages. Pelvic ultrasound was all fine (23 Dec) so now waiting to hear back from doc re tweaking HRT. I have also been very stressed, so perhaps that impacted my hormone levels. Anyway - nothing nasty and many thanks to the PP who replied as that response helped me very much

Thanks for the update! I have by some miracle managed to secure a GP appointment for tomorrow as I’m on day 12 and still pretty heavy!

Fingers crossed for tomorrow
