Caffeine suddenly making me really anxious

Hello all

I’ve been a tea addict for years and have likely built a tolerance to it as have never felt jittery on it except when I was a teen.

Have been diagnosed by symptoms as being in perimenopause and wondering did anyone suddenly feel awful even after one cup of tea (black caffeinated) or coffee? I just can’t pick apart what is causing what sometimes. I seem to get these waves of awful jittery/racing thoughts/almost feel wired but tired? Almost always during beginning of luteal phase but also wondering if the caffeine makes it worse. Anyone have similar?

Yes absolutely!
Post menopause now but haven’t had caffeine in about 3 years.
I feel so much better.

Thank you! I’ve reduced it but I think I may have to knock it on the head!!

Yes! I have really had to cut back on coffee/swap to decaf because it absolutely makes my anxiety worse.

Yes and I feel like it sits on my stomach a bit too and have gone off it a bit

Yeah I did read something about the tannins maybe being more of an irritant.

It definitely did that to me too for a while, I just couldn’t tolerate it. But about a year later, it’s not so bad and I can have an espresso now and again.

Oh so that’s a thing…. the tannins

…. hard to know what schiz belongs to what at this age

Hohofortherobbers · 25/11/2025 17:05

Yep, I have decaff since starting HRT.

ForFunGoose · 25/11/2025 17:06

Yes, at the start of menopause I had a histamine issue. It settled once I started HRT and I’m back enjoying coffee and wine again.

That’s my issue, have a hard time untangling what’s causing what and just as I tease out one issue another comes in grrrrr

Yes. I rarely have coffee at all and drink decaffeinated tea.

Wotrewelookinat · 26/11/2025 09:17

Yes, used to have a couple of coffees at work, can't tolerate them much any more as the caffeine really ramps up my anxiety (which is aleady pretty high at work these days). If I'm having a good day, i'll allow myself one caff coffee, but only before midday as otherwise it affects my sleep...

Thanks so much everyone, feeling so much better for reducing, having two in the morning before 12pm and may try giving up soon.
