Coming off the mini pill - your experience!

Through a combination of disorganisation and interest, I’ve stopped taking the mini pill. I’ve been on it for years and years. I’m 45. I’m not using it as a method of contraception anymore. I fancied seeing where I’m at hormonally. So far, I’ve had a really heavy ‘period’ immediately and basically felt awful for two weeks. Awful headaches. Anyone any experience of what to expect? Wondering why I’m bothering other than interest!

Hi I'll be following this as I am supposed to stop mine.
I'm early 50s. I take it continuously and like having the hormonal safety it gave me mentally.

Terrible PMS every month for a week has been my experience. I’ve tried to go back on it this month but keep forgetting to take it and IDK why. I never missed it once before I stopped for three months. 😵‍💫

I went off it to try for my second baby at 42. I’d only been on it less than a year since I had my first baby. I think the periods started pretty much straight away and I was pregnant within four months. So I don’t recall an initial heavy period or anything else, just pretty much back to normal. I didn’t go through menopause until my mid 50s.

Eeek, I’m nearly 46 and have been on it for 10 years or so, also interested in what’s going on ‘behind the scenes’ but too scared to come off! 🫣😬

Thanks! I know I’ll need to come off it eventually and originally thought I’d give it til C’mas but I’m not sure swapping it for a reliance on paracetamol is the greatest choice. I live with a teen and a tween and there’s enough hormonal imbalance without me adding more unnecessarily!

I am sleeping like the actual dead, I would add!

I went from desogestrel back onto Femodene at 47 as my oestrogen was so low on the mini pill that I'd started to have problems.

At the age of 49 I stopped taking anything to see where I am and have not had a period for 10 months now, and counting and feel pretty good.

Hardly any menopause/low oestrogen symptoms so far and no return of endometriosis. I have been amazed.

That’s great! I’m so pleased for you.
