Side effects from using Utrogestan vaginally…

Hi all, i am 51 and post meno, I have tried Evorel Sequi and Conti and had a coil fitted (which had to be removed after 12 days) and reacted badly to the progesterone. I had a referral to a meno clinic who gave me the go ahead to use Utrogestan vaginally to stop side effects. She told me that unfortunately using it this way wouldn’t help with my sleep problems. However, I do definitely sleep better BUT I feel so groggy the next day! I’ve tried inserting it earlier in the evening but it made no difference. Usually I’m up and out in the morning with the dog but it’s taking me a while to get going now! And I feel tired most of the day!

Will this settle? I’m ready to just give up on HRT! The only reason I’m desperate to get on it is due to recurring (possibly embedded) UTIs. I’m due to see her again to discuss long term antibiotics. I also take Hiprex and use Vagifem. The urologist advised that HRT would help with them but I honestly think I felt better without HRT! 😩 Any advice based on experiences would be appreciated x

I take it vaginally and have no problems (orally I was v bloated and sore breasts). Sorry to hear about your UTIs. I'm no doctor but would be vey wary of long term antibiotics...

You really need vaginal estrogen for the bladder stuff @abouttoturn50
Systemic HRT will help but you have to get estrogen into the vagina where it's absorbed by the bladder surrounding tissues.
I know you're using vagifem but you probably need to up the dose. Twice a week often isn't enough

@JinglingSpringbellsI use the Vagifem most days. It’s the systemic in having problems with, I don’t want to just give up I was hoping to hear from ladies who have maybe had the same problem and some reassurance it will settle.

I’ve been having horrible nightmares too, both with just the oestrogen and with both! ☹️

Using it vaginally you can insert it any time- doesn't have to be bedtime. As long as it doesn't fall out before it's dissolved.

Might be worth a go?

Cyclogest is similar and may be worth trying too.

I use Utrogestan vaginally. It disturbs my sleep (get very hot and restless) but I don't wake up tired.

I had no idea that disturbed sleep was a side effect of taking Utrogestan vaginally - but it is certainly happening to me. It's also increased my vaginal dryness again to the point I'm having to take Ovestin alongside Vagifem to try and reduce the discomfort

@JinglingSpringbellsI’ve tried different times too, still makes me feel tired and groggy, still had nightmares etc. I’m going to stick to just the vaginal oestrogen for now. Have a break from systemic and see where I am! Then if needed I’ll give the Tibolone a go! TBH I don’t have horrendous meno symptoms it was mainly on the hope it helped with the UTIs but reading up on this it seems the topical oestrogen is more beneficial anyway. I’m taking probiotics and Hiprex too so fingers crossed! 🤞🏻

@PuppyluckyI was under the impression there would be little to no side effects using it vaginally! Oestrogen causes me to have disturbed sleep too and tbh I felt better before I started them because I slept better! ☹️☹️
