Wine makes you feel like shit in peri?

Periwinehell · 17/08/2025 08:35

Have always loved wine - red or white. However, I’m now almost 47, peri, and have noticed it makes me feel utter shite the next day.

I don’t drink much these days as it is, my husband and I tend to share a bottle on a weekend night, so max half a bottle, which is not far over a large glass.

but I feel absolutely awful the next day.

is this happening to anyone else? It’s utter shite!!! Does it go back the other way once through the menopause?

Yep. It tasted horrible too. Gave it up. Feel much better for it.

Periwinehell · 17/08/2025 08:41

Do you drink other types of alcohol? Just wondering if anything I can switch to or if I’ve just got to go cold turkey!

Yes, it started to make me violently sick after having just a couple of glasses. I don’t really drink at all now, prefer a cuppa.

CakesofPan · 17/08/2025 08:43

Yup, pretty much given it up. It’s not worth it.

Surreyblah · 17/08/2025 08:43

half a bottle is 375ml or 4.5 units. I can get away with up to two units, usually have around 175ml, and feel OK, so I change to alcohol free drinks after one.

Not really. I’ll have a glass of champagne at a wedding or a glass of cider on occasion. It just isn’t worth it anymore.

LastKnownSurvivor · 17/08/2025 08:50

Yes, you're right. I've stopped drinking alcohol now. I can't say that it's made a miraculous difference to my overall wellbeing, being teetotal, but at least I don't have hangovers and now I have broken the habit, I don't miss it anymore.

Doje · 17/08/2025 08:50

Me too. I've all but given it up. I'm experimenting with other kinds of alcohol but finding it not worth it.

My sleep is massively disturbed, I get restless legs in the night, and feel very low the next day.

Gutted as I used to love a good drink.

CornedBeef451 · 17/08/2025 08:53

I had to stop drinking completely for a while but since starting HRT I can have a glass of wine again.

PistachioTiramisuLimoncello · 17/08/2025 08:54

Gin

Zempy · 17/08/2025 08:55

As I got older my hangovers got progressively worse and now I very rarely drink at all.

It makes me feel like shit. Saved lots of money though!

Tiddlywinkly · 17/08/2025 09:04

Yes! I used to like wine. Now I don't like the taste. I like a JD and caffeine free Pepsi Max, but I can't drink much. The effect on my sleep isn't really worth it.

3KidsPlusDdog · 17/08/2025 09:08

Yes, I’ve pretty much given it up. I will have a glass when out for a meal (which isn’t often at all) but I no longer drink wine at home.

I had horrendous anxiety the next day, and was awake from 3AM. Not worth it.

Whereismyjoiedevivre · 17/08/2025 09:08

Sorry to say OP but from now on all alcohol will make you feel terrible the next day. Red wine is the worst, have given it up entirely. I have perhaps two drinks a week now, usually early evening, and lower alcohol content wines. It’s a bloody bore tbh.

Branleuse · 17/08/2025 09:08

It doesn't agree with me at all anymore. Its not worth it.

Miriabelle · 17/08/2025 09:12

Loved wine and can’t drink more than the odd small glass any more! Lots of it also tastes not nice to me these days. I don’t have many vices (or pleasures) so it was pretty gutting to suddenly not even be able to tolerate wine (it suddenly makes me feel muzzy, sick and headachy even in small amounts).

I’ve sometimes heard it gets better again after menopause but is that true?

DiordreBarlow · 17/08/2025 09:15

As I've aged alcohol has agreed with me less and less. Terrible hangovers even after just a couple of drinks and raised anxiety. I stopped altogether and feel so much better, more peaceful, have lost weight, saved money and am on an even keel.

Just one drink harshes my mellow and I just got to the stage where I wondered why I was doing it to myself.

EarringsandLipstick · 17/08/2025 09:19

Yes!

I never drank much but enjoyed a glass of red wine at weekends, rarely more than that. Now, I don’t enjoy it, and I feel rubbish - not sick but woolly-headed, depressed, bloated, headachy. I don’t even like the taste as used to.

I’ve found that the very rare chance I get to have an early-bird meal, or lunch, and have a really good glass of wine, I can tolerate that - but that’s very rare in my life so I effectively now don’t drink at all.

This is me too! I don’t really go out, and wouldn’t drink any other alcohol at home, so my occasional glass of wine at the weekend was a genuine treat and I’m cross it’s gone!

Peanutbutterflies · 17/08/2025 09:35

Im the same! I can probably have a small glass but then any more and I realise im not enjoying it, im not feeling drunk but queasy, I have a shit night sleep and then feel rubbish nights sleep! So just not worth it....finding it hard though socially as many of my friends are drinkers...not huge drinkers but like a few glasses of wine in the evening and im the sober one...think I need to find new friends!

Periwinehell · 17/08/2025 13:12

I’m wondering whether I start baking instead. If I can’t drink I may as well enjoy the calories elsewhere.

why does bloody everything affect women - you don’t see men having this problem!

The day I start preferring a "cuppa" to a glass of champagne is the day you take me out back and put me out of my misery.

Yes!! This has happened to me recently, at nearly 47. Always loved my wine, but now white tastes sour, rosé is too sweet, and red all tastes like gone off sherry. Sparkling wine, bizarrely, still tastes ok, but the fizz means I can’t drink more than a couple of glasses as I get too gassy.

menopausalmare · 17/08/2025 13:17

My tolerance for wine has definitely reduced and it wrecks my sleep. Gin and tonic is a better option for me, although I still love wine.
