Mirena coil fitting before holiday

I’m due to have my first mirena coil fitted ten days before we go on holiday - an active holiday with swimming and kayaking and surfing etc. Is this terrible timing?

My period is also due mid-holiday. I can’t work out whether it would be better to delay the appointment - is it going to mess my period up so I don’t know whether it’s coming or not, or likely cause other side effects that are going to ruin my holiday?

I’m having it put in for peri purposes - my periods are still regular but I have a ton of other peri symptoms and the doc felt this would be better than HRT which would likely mess up my clockwork periods.

Any recent new mirena experiences welcome!

I had no period for 2 months after fitting, whereas dsd came on 2 weeks after fitting and after 4 months continuous period she had it out. Everyone is different so it’s very hard to say!

i had one for contraception and have breezed through into my 50’s with no peri symptoms

I'd delay.
I bled very lightly but intermittently for months after my first was inserted. I was really fed up with it and wanted the coil removed but several years on I am glad I persevered because once the bleeding stopped, it stopped for good.

I wonder if the GP would prescribe some norethisterone (no idea if that’s the right spelling!) at the same appointment to cover my holiday period?

Have you had one before, and therefore know how your body will react to it? If you aren't sure I would definitely suggest delaying. I had one as part of HRT and had ongoing pain it it, and an absolutely massive bleed about 10 days after fitting. Also it affected my mood and emotions quite badly and made me extremely anxious and tearful. I had it removed fairly promptly and was back to my normal self in a few days, so all definitely due to the Merina, in my case.

I haven’t no - this is the first one. I’ve read so many horror stories, but also so many incredibly positive ones! I have such bad PMT, flooding periods and now all the peri symptoms that I have to do something, and the mirena seemed to be the best fit for it all.

I had a coil put in eight days ago to be part of my HRT and I now need an appointment (scheduled for a couple days from now) to check that the coil hasn’t moved (the threads are much longer than I expected, but might just need trimming). This isn’t an emergency by any means as I’m now pain free and just have a bit of annoyance/rubbing with the thread location but I will not be swimming (infection risk) and if I was on holiday, the stress would likely ruin the holiday. I’d postpone if you can.
