Period lasting nearly three weeks

Just wanted to know if this is commonly experience for other peri-monpausal women? Has been going on for nearly three weeks now, sometimes slows down and I think I'm done and then off it goes again. Doctor has booked me in for an ultrasound appointment but not sure how long this will take to come through and it is beginning to get me down! Otherwise feeling fine in myself.

My first period lasted 2 months straight. I got diagnosed with a 9x11cm ovarian cyst that had twisted my ovary over on itself 4 times, and killed it off for lack of blood flow.

So it’s definitely good you’re getting an ultrasound done. If nothing comes up on it, get your progesterone tested as well; if that’s low, it can cause prolonged periods.

Hop you get your appointment soon OP. I've had this and I'm still going through investigations etc. I was told I'm in Peri and the period you describe is a classic example of Peri periods. That said, they like to scan to check it isn't fibroids, polyps etc. Overall, is your three week period heavy, light, medium?

I had this end of last year, went on for 4 weeks before I went to GP who prescribed tablets which stopped it overnight. I already knew I had fibroids though and was sent for an ultrasound which confirmed they were still there albeit small ones. Since then my periods have got lighter, shorter and I've missed a couple so am sure menopause is close (I'm in my 50s). Whether that episode was caused by hormones or fibroids or a combination of the two I'll never know!

Glad it stopped for you. What pills were prescribed?

@Seekinginfolady Norehisterone. Took it for a couple of weeks I think and, touch wood, it hasn't happened again since.

That's good. Keep us posted with your ultrasound

My last one lasted about 8 weeks - it was brutal, like my innards were coming out. One before that was 6 weeks. My GP gave me medroxyprogesterone and that really helped - it’s been coming up for 2 months now since it finished so I’m hoping to goodness that’s them finished, I’m ridiculously old to still be having periods.

Yes, this happened to me several times, it was miserable.

StrangerThings73 · 26/05/2025 11:09

Thank you all for your helpful replies. No date for ultrasound as yet but I will keep you posted and will definitely get my progesterone levels checked out.
