Coming off HRT

footballerswifey · 21/05/2025 19:19

I’ve had to come off HRT. I’ve followed my GP’s guidance to reduce it gradually. I’m in my final week now and I feel like I have very low level flu and just want to stay in bed.

Has anyone experienced this? I’ve googled the symptoms of coming off HRT and they are usually things like insomnia and headaches

I haven’t bled for 2 years so bit of a shock to have one now and womb lining was thickened so sequi is not for me.

Edited

Can I just add something here partly for anyone else reading?

First, it's not 'normal' to have no withdrawal bleed on sequi. (It suggests the estrogen dose was too low OR you weren't absorbing the progesterone to give a bleed each month.)

It would be good practice to scan you if you weren't having a regular bleed to see what was going on.

The womb lining is naturally thicker on sequi because it thickens then sheds over the 4-week cycle. The only way to get an accurate measurement is immediately after the withdrawal bleed.

I came off cold turkey like a previous poster after almost 20 years as I had to have major surgery. GP didn't put me back on afterwards said it was time I stopped taking it at 63. I wanted to stay on it until I retired.
Awful, I feel like I have electric pins and needles along with boiling hot flushes everytime I lie down. I am most uncomfortable.

Go back on it - see another GP?

I'm going to, I can't bear it.

what was the reason if you don’t mind saying?

I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

I came off HRT last month and did it cold turkey. The only withdrawal symptom I noticed was feeling really tired for a while, but I’m feeling fine now. The main reason I stopped was that it made me feel emotionally flat, almost like I was numb. One of the biggest changes I noticed was in my libido. Before HRT, I’d usually want sex around ovulation, so maybe a couple of times a month, but on HRT, that completely disappeared. I had zero interest, which wasn't great for my partner. He thought it would increase my sex drive, not kill it off entirely. The frustrating thing is that it didn’t really help with the symptoms I was originally put on it for either, so in the end, it just didn’t feel worth it. Has anyone else experienced this emotional blunting or total loss of libido on HRT? And did anyone find something that worked better, either a different type of HRT or an alternative approach?

I came off HRT - had already been halving my 50 patch then stopped. Felt very muscle achy for a few weeks especially first thing in the morning, then as my body adjusted fine after that.

Although cleared at the breast clinic of anything sinister , the consultant there suggested I think about coming off hrt . I’ve been on it 6 years.

The consultant is out of date.
