What is the recovery like after a Diagnostic laparoscopy?

I'm going in for a diagnostic laparoscopy at the end of April. I just want to be clear on what to expect in terms of pain and recovery The week after.

i'm having it to look at adhesions and scar tissue to determine whether we can go ahead with a hysterectomy later in the year.

the consultant has said I'll be feeling fine after a few days but I'd rather hear that from a woman who's had one! Anything useful to pack in the bag? So far I have read to hydrate lots the day before to help with recovery and to expect some shoulder pain from the gas. TIA!

Hello, happy to offer you insight from my experience. I had endometriosis removed via laparoscopy back in 2023.

Make sure to pack loose fitting trousers, not leggings or jeans & a loose top to travel home in.

A cushion in the car for between your tummy & the seat belt.

Take all the pain relief they offer you in case you need it. Make sure they give you something to help with post surgery constipation. Ice packs with a towel over it can also help pain.

You won’t be able to stand up straight for a few days, but the wounds heal surprisingly quick.

The shoulder pain is real, move your arms around as if pretend swimming and keep getting up to move around, it helps the gas go quicker.

The first week is the toughest but by week 2 you’ll be more back to yourself & potentially driving & out and about again.

Get lots of meals prepared to make it easy when you get home, rest up and be gentle to yourself. Everyone heals differently.

Hope all goes well for you both xxx

I had one a few years ago and the shoulder pain was more than I expected… peppermint tea helped to deflate!
comfy loose clothes for after for sure and don’t rush back to any plans for a few days after
