Weird sensation - is this a perimenopause thing?

Recently i experience these sudden waves that feel like something between dread and nausea but I feel it right through my body - it starts in my head and then spreads in a wave through my body and down my limbs then dissipates.

It’s really hard to explain the feeling, it’s really quite horrible as it’s more than just a physical sensation, it a feeling of sudden doom. But then it’s gone in a few seconds

I’ve heard of menopause related “electric shocks” - is what they feel like?

I get electric shocks (actually I always have but they are more frequent now). It doesnt sound like that (which sounds awful btw 💐), it just physically feels like a shock.

I think I know what you’re describing. I have had something similar but for me it feels like it starts in my chest and radiates from there. It feels warm and I do get the sense of doom. I think it’s anxiety related to peri. It only lasts a few seconds but isn’t nice.

I have had a lot of different peri symptoms over the past year, but none of them at the same time and they are all passing. Each time I think that it’s time to start HRT the symptom will pass. I generally feel fine so I’m so confused about whether to go on it or not.

Yes that sounds similar - it’s really hard to describe the feeling, it’s just very weird. I described it as nausea but it’s not really nausea as such, just a very odd feeling thaT runs through me in a wave and turn goes.

Fortunately it doesn’t happen so often but I’m just curious whether it might be peri related.

It's another version of a hot flush but without the feeling of being hot.

Yes I get this too, exactly as you describe. It normally preceeds a hot flush.

Offredismysister · 25/03/2025 08:59

I get this too exactly as you describe, not often but had one on Saturday & it made me feel really out of sorts. I also flush & go blotchy on my chest & neck which is fun!

Have you had your blood pressure and heart checked out....it's probably peri. But heart issues can present weirdly.

I’ve had thorough cardiology checks in the last couple of years for unconnected reasons and given a clean bill of health and BP checks more recently so hopefully I’m ok there.

i remember having somewhat similar weird doom/panic waves when I was pregnant so I think it’s likely something to do with hormone changes.

Yes, the only time I have had this is when I was breastfeeding. I felt the doom just before the let down which was terrifying (and I gave up!) I only found out much later that it was hormone-related.

I’m glad you’ve posted this! And @FishfingerFlinger , too.

I get the feeling occasionally and it’s how I remember the oxytocin release when breastfeeding. Then, it was ok, but now it’s hideous. Makes me feel so sick until it passes.

Zippidydoodah · 25/03/2025 14:13

I will add that I didn’t feel the doom when I was breastfeeding, just the disgusting wave of nausea, but now it’s all of it. Yay.

I think I’m experiencing something like this. I get a sensation in my head as if a thought is going to come, almost like a rush of a thought, but then nothing comes. Followed by a wave of anxiety. Hard to describe and unpleasant. HRT hasn’t helped this symptom.

hedgheog · 01/04/2026 12:28

I get random feelings of doom/dread since my hormones started fluctuating. It’s not nice but cbt techniques help, I can ride it out now and know it will pass. Try to keep on top of all the usual like sleep, fresh air etc.
