Anyone else get heartburn as a perimenopause symptom?

Hi. I'm going through the symptoms of perimenopause including stopped periods now. The latest symptom is heartburn...is this normal and how do you treat this? This can happen anytime and is not linked to food.

I do, I still get periods, irregular and sometimes MIA all together, but I'm getting heartburn with no triggers I can identify.
I did suffer really badly with it in pregnancy as well.
I think everyone gets it from time to time but I'm not someone who's suffered with it a lot over the years except during pregnancy and now.

Yes I do! More acid reflux. My cycle is now averaging 55 days. It comes and goes and isn’t always from food. I use Gaviscon, you can get them to carry in your handbag too. The berry one is nicer than the mint one. I order from boots. Just another sodding perimenopausal treat for us to endure hey!

Shayisgreat · 23/02/2025 10:09

Oh man - it didn't even occur to me that the heartburn I've been having could relate to perimenopause.

Changingdisincase · 23/02/2025 10:11

Indigestion was a problem for me in recent years. I was eating Gaviscon tablets daily. Since I started HRT I use them maybe once a month I think?

Swearwolf · 23/02/2025 10:19

Yes! I've always had tendencies towards heartburn and reflux, right down to being a vomity baby! Mainlined gaviscon throughout both pregnancies and now at 40 I'm getting heartburn and indigestion again, coinciding with my cycle getting shorter.

Pearl97 · 23/02/2025 10:31

It didn’t occur to me either! I keep feeling like I am really full too. All very strange.

Thanks guys...it helps to know others are experiencing this. I tried a Gaviscon the other day and was surprised how quickly they work. Blumin peri argh!!!!!

I have had really bad indigestion at times. Gaviscon really helps. Sleeping propped up. Limiting chocolate and caffeine. Just when I need that the most.

Another one here. It's horrible. I cannot wait for all this to be over!

What I thought was indigestion was my gallbladder letting me know it wasn’t happy. After an attack so bad I was sent to A&E, it was removed and the “indigestion” stopped.

ArcticBells · 25/02/2025 05:59

I'm nearly through the menopause and still having heartburn

My GB is coming out on Thursday! Blasted thing is full of sludge. Will be interesting to see what difference it makes on the whole reflux etc. Any tips for recovery? x

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 28/02/2025 04:30

@Fitzfuckitall i had mine removed in the evening of the day I was admitted and I was home by lunchtime the following day. I don’t remember any huge discomfort and I’m eating the same things I was prior with no effects. Mine was full of sludge too. Best wishes!

Another one here with severe heartburn possibly related to peri. Some nights I have to sleep propped up with 3 pillows and even that doesn't help completely.
