I can't tolerate wine any longer.

Possibly the best side effect of perimenopause. Pounding headache after 1 bottle of wine, drank slowly over several hours last night. If I drink white I get indigestion and also a headache. Time to give it up. I don't drink anything else.

That's handy, I had developed too much of a habit. I m starting to feel allergic now. I don't enjoy it and I m bored of it, drinking seems pointless and dull.

Any other menopausal positives?

46 in April, Havnt had a bleed in 10 weeks. Went 5 months last year, May to Oct, got 3 periods and nothing since December. I feel v late perimenopausal. Fingers crossed my journey to menopause is almost over.

I haven't been able to drink 1(!) glass of wine without suffering the next day, for years and years

Waitingfordaffs · 19/02/2025 17:50

For me it was bread and pasta as well as wine - I used to love pasta

I started having an issue with wine when I was about 40, 12 years before menopause, or indeed anything even suggesting menopause, so it isn't necessarily related IME. A relative developed an intolerance to white wine in her mid 30's.

As people get older we don't metabolise alcohol as well - that's why hang overs become so unbelievably evil as we age. I also think a lot of modern wines have a lot of additives as well which doesn't help.

I know few people over 40 who can drink wine like they used to, but beer, spirits etc seem to be okay which makes me think it must be something specifically in wine.

Anything more than 2-3 glasses of wine or g&t's now and I'm horrendously hungover. And it would take at least 2 days before I'd feel normal.

No problem with wine but I'm having a hard time avoiding coffee. I'm a coffee lover, but I need to stop my morning caffeine ritual due to hot flashes and night sweats.

No I can't drink wine at all. I now stick to a liqueur. Disaronna and a diet coke is my favourite tipple now

Arrggghhhhhh · 19/02/2025 18:13

The answer as always is Prosecco.

witwatwoo · 19/02/2025 18:14

No me neither, no wine, Prosecco, fizz, nothing

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 19/02/2025 18:14

It recently dawned on me that my insomnia is on the nights I drink wine, which is only at weekends.

NormaSnorks · 19/02/2025 18:14

Yes same here.

You might find you're OK with some organic wines or sulphite-free ones, but the range is limited.

I drink the occasional G&T, but that's about it.

Arran2024 · 19/02/2025 18:16

I can't drink wine either but for some reason I am easonably OK with cava as long as I have plenty to eat with it. I like fizzy kombucha instead of wine.

Hohofortherobbers · 19/02/2025 18:41

Yep, as always after a dry Jan I have to face it, I feel better if I don't drink.
