Joint pain and HRT

I’m 47 have had a few mild peri symptoms for years but the last 6 weeks I’ve had extremely painful joints. Has anyone found HRT helped? If so what are you taking? There seem to be so many options but I can’t find any particular recommendations for joint pain.

Second worst symptom is dry mouth, unreal how irritating that is!
Still having periods but 60ish day cycle and fairly light.

Yes massively! Just started month 3 of Evorel Sequi 50 and after 5 days my knees, elbows and ankles were aching about 75% less! My mouth was fine, but skin dry and eyes horrendously dry, 3 sets of expensive drops x 4 daily each - don’t need them now. It’s like a miracle, I feel normal again on month 3. Do it!

Yep. Joint pain was my least favourite peri symptom and is considerably reduced by hrt.

Yes HRT helped achy joints enormously and it was a lovely surprise. I originally sought HRT for help with awful hot flushes. I was given conti patches and within weeks hot flushes had stopped completely and joints were a lot less painful. 5 years in I have absolutely no aches and pains at all. (I’m 59).

Just to throw this at you - have a look into Sjögren’s syndrome, it’s very under diagnosed and often occurs in menopausal women. The dry mouth and joint pain are classic symptoms. It often occurs alongside lupus. (I have both, and other autoimmune issues). A rheumatologist can diagnose. I do find HRT helps, I went into early menopause at 37 (now 44), I’m on the patches and also take the mini pill for extra progesterone (I’m on evorel conti). It took me a while to find the right HRT as I was previously on oestrogel and utrogestan which just gave me a lot of diarrhoea and bleeding, no bleeding at all now.

I'm so glad I've found your post. I'm 46 and my joints are really aching, it's been getting worse recently, so bad that the doctor is sending me for blood tests and X rays.

I have no peri symptoms, no hot flushes etc. I've always had a bit of insomnia so it's not new and the coil means I've no idea about my periods!
Anyway, does this sound like to could be the menopause? I'm so confused?

I have terrible joint pain. I tried hrt because of it. It hasn't helped. If my gums have got worse at my dentist appointments next month I'm stopping as these were the only two reasons I went on it.

DramaAlpaca · 15/02/2025 23:01

HRT in the form of Oestrogel and Utrogestan helped my joint pain almost immediately.

Didsomeonesaydogs · 15/02/2025 23:04

Yep - my symptoms were achy elbows and headaches. Both totally disappeared within about 3 months of starting hrt, but noticeably improved within a few weeks.

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/02/2025 23:06

I had terrible joint pain and HRT really helped me.

Yep me too, pre HRT I had hip pain that I could see was related to my cycle, worse before and during then improved for two weeks before starting again. It's gone with HRT

Yes - google had suggested Sjogrens, but the dry mouth very much comes and goes with my cycle so I’m hoping just bloody hormones! I will ask GP though. Thanks, good to hear it’s helped you.

I’ve had about 10 hot flushes over maybe a month about 2 years ago, so I’d have been 45ish. Stopped as suddenly as they started! Who knows!

Thanks everyone - I think I will give it a go. Encouraging to hear that its helped most of you. There used to be a GP with an interest in women’s health at our practice, hope she’s still there!
