Did I just... have my first hot flash?

Hi, there!

I'm looking for some support and help - I don't have a mum to ask, and so hoping that some of you will take me under your wing!

I'm 39, and I think I just had a hot flush. I was working away at my laptop, and suddenly felt very warm in my face. I didn't think much of it. Then after a minute, my whole body was radiating, and my face, chest and arms became bright red. Reallt intense prickly heat. I stripped off, and started to panic that I was having some kind of allergic reaction. I doused myself in freezing water, on the face, ears and behind the neck and eventually, slowly, it started to go. Then I started to feel cold and shivery.

My periods are still regular, they have been consistent in duration and flow. I had surgery last year on an ovary to remove a cyst.

Any insight?!!

Thank you!

Polly

Hi @ikindaneedamum

I'm no expert but I've had exactly the same symptoms but only at night and only the week before my period arrives.

Do you have other peri symptoms?

ikindaneedamum · 09/01/2025 17:12

Hi, Laura! Thank you so much!

I'm about 9/10 days out from my next period, so that's interesting! I don't think I have any other peri symptoms... but I should look them up to be sure! Life and health have been pretty normal. I honestly thought I was dying from some kind of allergic reaction - but within 3 minutes or so, it was all over.

Well you might be coming down with flu. It's more likely than an early menopause.

If it was very intense and moved through your body, made you feel as it you were on fire and then went, yes, sounds very much like it. Might be worth just noting it so you can track to see if you develop a pattern. You can be in peri for years before you have menopause. It's been ten years for me, but I should finally be there end of Jan. 🤞🤞

39 seems very young. I had my first hot flush when I was 49 and already my periods were becoming fewer and further between. I had eaten a slightly spicy meal but I got incredibly overheated and it took maybe half an hour or more to return to normal. If it’s any comfort, the first one was the worst.
As a PP suggested, make a note of any changes you notice from now on.

Some people go through menopause in their 30s and early 40s
