Can the practice nurse prescribe vaginal oestrogen?

I’ve been on hrt for a while now but I think I need vaginal estrogen. I did pay for a few tubes online but at £55 a go I just can’t keep paying that. I can’t face seeing the Gp because they are very anti hrt and recently when I asked to increase the dose I was met with so much resistance and doom mongering from them and they previously refused me vaginal estrogen cream because they didn’t want my system over loaded with hormones.

The practice nurses are so much more positive and knowledgeable about HRT so I wondered if it’s the kind of thing they can prescribe? I am in Scotland.

They will need to be a nurse prescriber to do that.

Yes, seconded..check first to see if they can prescribe, you may well get it more easily.

What one are you using, Boots sell Ovesse online (1mg/g estriol) without a prescription, you just need to fill in a questionnaire online. Its £19 per tube which is a lot less than you are paying but it is only 15g so pretty small.

Not sure why GPS seem to gatekeep this, the studies show that very little is absorbed systemically and blood levels don't change, or if they do, it's practically imperceptible, when it's used topically.

@stclair &@Oneearringlost Thanks for this info. I will make some enquiries next time I see the nurse.

@HootyMcBooby I use a generic estriol cream it’s 80 grams though so perhaps quite cost effective, I just bought it from an online pharmacy. I have no idea why my GP makes it so difficult to get this or HRT in general she’s a woman just a few years older than me so you’d think she would be sympathetic.

My GP Practice has a nurse practitioner who specialises in menopause, she can prescribe.

Is there only the one GP on your practice ? Can you not see a different one? You will only need to see them once, then it will go on repeat prescription.
