HRT patch placement

Doesn’t matter where the patch goes as long as it is not on your upper body, near your breasts?

I’ve had some issues with patches coming off but found if I put them on my wobbly inner thigh, they are fine.

I saw the practice nurse for a repeat script and she said it had to go over a muscle. I said oh has it not been working then, and she said well have you had relief from symptoms and the discussion veered off about the BBC programme I didn’t watch.

The leaflet says nothing about muscles, just gave me a placement zone, the internet says nothing about placing it over a muscle. Does it matter?

I have been feeling ok with the patches.

I've never heard about needing to be over muscle.

EveryDayisFriday · 09/10/2024 07:53

My order is: left bum cheek, right bum cheek, left front thigh , right front thigh.

CrotchetyQuaver · 09/10/2024 08:11

Read the leaflet in the box and don't go on what the nurse says! I use gel now but my recollection is anywhere they'll stick on the lower body. They didn't stick very well to me which is why I use gel.

Gunpowder · 09/10/2024 08:13

I was told the fatty areas are better for absorption - so bottom cheeks or inner thighs. I’ve never heard the thing about a muscular area being better.

KnottedTwine · 09/10/2024 08:13

Never been told they have to go over a muscle. All I have ever been told is below the waist, so anywhere over your bum, thigh area. If you are finding that the patches stick well, and appear to be working, then your chosen location is fine.

Yet another example of poor advice from the NHS...

twentysevendresses · 09/10/2024 09:23

So glad I saw this thread! My GP told me to stick it on my stomach, which I have been doing, but my stomach is so wrinkled and stretch-marked that it is quite painful (the plastic irritates the skin).

Will place it on my thigh next time!

NaanAnaan · 09/10/2024 09:25

hi I’m starting patches next week - do they tend to rub off due to chub-rub on your inner thigh?
thanks!

Redcrayons · 09/10/2024 09:26

Anywhere below the belly button I was told. I’ve switched to gel now, but I used to put it on my hip.

WhereAreWeNow · 09/10/2024 09:30

I've read (on here probably) that fatty areas absorb estrogen better. I put mine on my upper bum/hip area.
Never heard about putting it on muscle. Even if that were true, surely the thigh muscles are a pretty big muscle group?!

Greenkindness · 09/10/2024 12:31

Thanks for the replies. My GP practice is otherwise fantastic so no complaints from me generally. I’ll stick to my thigh location.

Hi - I put it slightly up of the inner bit that rubs. I think because I have fat there it withstands getting up and down etc. Maybe we all have our own sweet spot for it?! I’ve had more problem them coming off on my outer thigh.

My top tip is not to put it anywhere there is a seam rubbing. If you're sticking it on your bum, make sure it's either entirely covered with your pants or entirely exposed, the only time I have had problems with patches coming loose is when there's been rubbing on the edges of the patch from knicker seams, or swimsuit, or jeans.

GaladrielHiggins · 09/10/2024 13:14

For anyone who has issues with patches not sticking, I use something like this patch it also stops the edges getting stuck with clothes fibres, which leaves a horrid sticky ring on my skin when I take the old patch off.

Dulra · 10/10/2024 09:17

I put mine on my lower tummy, tried bum and hip but they always came off

Livedandlearned · 10/10/2024 10:02

Mine go on the top of my thighs, only ever fallen off a few times in 2 years.

MiddleAgedDread · 10/10/2024 12:46

Mine fall off all the time! I do a lot of exercise so sweat and shower a fair bit but i'm also convinced that some boxes are dodgy compared to others as it seems like I go through a spell of them coming off more than at other times. I tend to use my bum cheeks, lower back, side of hip and can just about fit one below my belly button on the front. Never tried my inner thigh. I tried the tattoo patches but they didn't have enough overlap so actually made them come off more readily as that peeled and then the HRT patch peeled with it! I'm waiting on an appointment to discuss alternatives as the GP practice keep getting stroppy about me ordering them before they're due for reorder.

Delatron · 10/10/2024 13:00

Mine never fall off - estradot? They are small though too which I think helps. I rotate between bum, hip and lower abs. But will try thighs next!

Greenkindness · 10/10/2024 22:53

I’ve got Evorel. Currently on the top of my bum as I had to back for a smear test with the same nurse so didn’t want to get in trouble! To be fair it has stayed put, am surprised because I am a restless sleeper. Thanks for all the input.

I had one box where they repeated came off, maybe it was a dodgy batch and not related to placement!
