Mirena out, did your periods return?

I’m 54 and I’ve got a Mirena for heavy periods.
Its due out next year, and I’m wondering if people who had it out at around 54/55 found that their periods returned, or if that was it for them?

Hi! I am also 54 and have a mirena. How long have you had yours in? I believe the advice changes for women of our age and it can be in for 8 years instead of 5. Mine's been in 9 😬

But sorry, can't help with your question

Summerhillsquare · 08/10/2024 07:21

I used to ask docs this when I had the implant. They've no idea. It's very individual I think, after I stopped HRT my periods never came back properly but I'd been in perimenopause for years by then.

Fingers crossed for you OP, it's bloody (lol) marvellous without them!

No periods, out at 49

JinglingSpringbells · 08/10/2024 08:20

It's highly unlikely as very few women have periods at 55.

This is why combined continuous HRT is allowed for women over age 54 as 80% don't have an ovarian cycle (you can read this on Menopause Matters.)

Going back to your other question about doses of gel and micrograms, I hope the info has reassured you. But as you have a Mirena, it is used as a treatment for endometrial hyperplasia so even if (and it's not the case!) you were on a very high unlicensed dose of estrogen, the Mirena would go a long way to balancing that.

If you're worried about meno stuff, the Balance website has loads of info https://www.balance-menopause.com/menopause-library/

I ask because I’ve had a couple of bleeds/periods in the last 12 months, which have been checked by scan. I’m wondering if it’s my body having a last blast, or if it means ill start bleeding again when it’s out as I’m 54 now.
I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

54, had mirina out last year and yes periods have come back 🤨
Not monthly though, I can go anywhere between 3 weeks and 3 months between and sometimes it's just spotting.
I'd had it in for 7 years

gingercat02 · 08/10/2024 18:11

You may be able to keep it in (if you want to). Mine was due out last year. When i rang to book an appointment, the clinic said it could be 6 years now.
When I rang a few weeks ago, they said 8 years for contraception. At this rate, I may have it forever 🤣

I'm 55 btw and never going back to periods!
