When to start taking HRT with irregular periods

I've been prescribed HRT - gel and tablets, and am not clear when to start taking it. The doctor said 'any time' but the leaflet in the packs suggest starting taking it all on day 1 of a period. My periods are irregular, ie every 2 -3 months so I really have no idea when the next one is due. Would I be OK to start with the regime at any time, as the doctor has suggested? I am not trying to second guess the doctor, just seeking reassurance really.

The best way to do it is to use gel now, and you can either wait for 15 days then take Utrogestan for 12 days or start Utrogestan for 12 days now.

It's easier to stick to the same date each month for the progesterone so today is the 20th and then you'd start again 20th Sept.

the leaflet for Utrogestan says start on day 15 of your normal cycle (which is impossible if they are irregular.)

Presumably as you still have periods you're using a cycle on HRT and not using Utrogestan daily? (which is for women post-meno.)
