Has anyone had HRT stop working, so stopped it then restarted it to good effect?

Anyone with any experience of HRT being at first a life saver and then stopping being effective? My friend increased dose a few times over the past few years and each increase was due to severe mental health symptoms returning. Each HRT increase totally rid her of these symptoms and she was thriving. Until about 2 years ago when symptoms came back with a vengeance and no amount of increasing was having any effect. (She went up to 500, under the guidance of specialist, womb lining scanned and normal, bloods not concerning). She feels instinctively like her receptors aren’t functioning. So she's embarked on an experiment. Reduced dose gradually to zero and had 5 weeks with zero HRT and then 2 days ago stuck a 100 patch on again. Was hoping to ‘shake up and wake up’ the oestrogen receptors. It’s a hell of an unknown and she's right at the beginning of finding out whether this will have any effect whatsoever. Can anyone relate?? Anyone tried anything similar? Anyone got any anecdotes of how it went and whether it was helpful. Not looking for advice on antidepressants (tried Paroxetine, Sertraline, Citalopram, Escitalopram, Agomelatine and Mirtazapine over the years. To max doses and some combinations. They have had no positive effect and not helped). Thank you and appreciate honesty but nothing frightening please.
