Sharp stabbing pains in ovaries?

It would be around ovulation time, but I wondered if anyone else gets this? All day I've been getting quick, sharp stabs in what feels like the ovaries. Both of them. I'm 50 and pre-menopausal. Recent MRI showed a very small cyst in each ovary as an incidental finding, but that's pretty common and they were just simple cysts. I'm not overly concerned but wondered if this was part of the common peri experience?

Yes, here too, but it's more of a rolling ache around ovulation, with occasional stabs of sharp pain. Usually accompanied by spotting that lasts a few days. Abdominal discomfort is very common during peri, and for some women it can persist outside of ovulation and menstruation.

Thanks for your answer. It was just the one day and fine the next. I sometimes feel like I don't know my body anymore.

where is the pain? Could it be appendicitis or something?

If you could point to where your ovaries would be, it feels like it's right in there. I'm not sure if my body struggles to release the eggs at this stage, but it only lasted the day.

so, do you mean like at the top of your leg?

No, in the pelvis.

I get this still - mid 50s, pre menopause, and used to get it every month my entire fertile life, so I know what it is.
It even has a fancy German name : mittleschmertz

LaJoconde · 13/07/2024 13:58

@thebluebeyond sometimes pain in the pelvis is referred to the legs.
I was surprised to find that my thighs really ached in labour.

but the ovaries and womb are definitely in the pelvis!

I get this really badly these days. Felt like I needed gas and air. Scan showed no issues.

Changing my HRT regimen has really helped.

yes, ovaries are close to just at the top of your leg.

A lot of people think they are somewhere vaguely diagonally south of belly button, and call things "ovarian pain" when they are no where near there - and also don't posses pain nerves.

TeamPolin · 13/07/2024 20:50

Am having this right now! It's Ovulation pain / mittleschmerz.

I've found all my menstrual pain has got worse the nearer to menopause I get. I take mefanemic acid to help now as over the counter stuff was useless.

Longdueachange · 13/07/2024 20:53

Whenever my ovaries are, menstrual pain is in my belly, and has become more intense since I became pre meni.

I’ve been having this for months and had an ultrasound, I have an endometriosis cyst within my left ovary. It was agony on both sides and in my back at one point but has eased a little so I wonder if I had more smaller ones that died out? Anyway they are referring me now for an MRI to see what’s going on.

NippyCrab · 13/07/2024 21:16

This might explain pain I am getting at the moment @Kw1234hhggf the higher evorel patches have exacerbated my endo and I'm in horrible pain. I've taken it off tonight and I'm calling the GP Monday.

The pain in my hip area has been awful, I honestly thought I had bone cancer so was relieved about the endo cyst!

Thanks for the answers. I've always got Ovulation pain/mittleschmerz but it's always been a short stab and done for the month. It was all day with bloating a couple of days ago but fine the next day again. Maybe this is just my new normal for a bit.

Yes I had this for a while. Was given ultra sound and all ok. Then it just went after a while thankfully.

I'm glad it went away for you. Hopefully it will for me too. Since I had the MRI (for another reason but it captured the ovaries) I'm not too worried. If I hadn't had that I'd be getting an ultrasound to make sure.
