Help! Vaginal atrophy - Oestrogen cream not working.

supermooniskeepingmeup · 30/05/2024 08:55

The oestrogen cream works in that I'm not constantly sore, but penetrative sex is still too uncomfortable to be enjoyed - very occasionally endured, more like. Does anyone know whether there's anything else I could be asking for to make my sex life normal again, or whether this is it for good?

Try Vagifem. They’re very effective pessaries.

olderbutwiser · 30/05/2024 09:00

which cream are you using, how often, is it one you insert?

Pigeonqueen · 30/05/2024 09:02

How and how often are you using the cream? And how long have you been using it? I use Ovestin but it took a good few months for it to make a real difference and I had to use it a lot more than they originally suggested - I use it most days, externally and internally. I was on full HRT as well which also made a difference but had to stop that for various reasons but that’s something to consider as well if you haven’t already.

I couldn't get on with Vagifem - they passed out undissolved!

Ovestin and I've been told to use it 5 times a week and have been doing so for a couple of months. It's encouraging that you noticed a cumulative effect. Is penetrative sex okay now, and not painful? I am in patches as well but I don't think they're doing anything in terms of the atrophy. In fact, I'm thinking of stopping using them.

Thanks for your reply.

Are you using any lube? (As long as it can be used in conjunction with your estrogen) .

How is your libido? If you are enduring it, you may not be getting aroused at all.

Being honest I rarely have sex at all because I just don’t have the libido for it. I have lupus and I just don’t have the interest anymore but vaginal atrophy was making my life miserable from a pain / bladder irritation/ thrush point of view so it’s definitely helped and I feel a lot more comfortable than I did. I suspect if I wanted to I could probably have pain free sex now. It definitely has an increasingly good effect the longer you use it for.

Cattery · 30/05/2024 13:11

Ovestin has been a game changer for me and my irritated/weak bladder plus the stinging and burning from atrophy. I believe there are different topical HRT creams? Have a Google and check x

Hello there, Intrarosa vaginal suppository works for me really well.
it’s contain DHEA which is adding Östrogen and Testosteron to your tissues.

JinglingSpringbells · 30/05/2024 17:19

@supermooniskeepingmeup If you have shrunk (vaginally) you may need to consider 'medical' dilators. (I think you can buy online or maybe a dr can prescribe them.)

These come in various sizes and the idea is that you insert them to stretch everything. Sadly, if VA gets a hold the shrinkage can be a challenge and the only way to make things better is using the estrogen creams and practising stretching everything.

Oh gosh, I think that's what might have happened - I'm just not as stretchy as I was and now i need to do stretche there as well. Another job to add to the list sigh!

I get my jollies with my husband still, just not from PIV sex so the libido is okay. Not that I used to feel the Earth move from that anyway, it is just a shame that I'm not able to do it anymore.

Pesseries twice a week on top of your normal HTT

Brightandbubly · 30/05/2024 17:53

HRT

I have Vagifem and put them in at bedtime so I don’t get up for several hours so they stay in.

Hi can I ask how long it takes pessaries to work ? I was prescribed Vagirux after having 5 UTI’s within 3 months . Had a Cystoscopy and bladder healthy . Only been using them for 9 night now and vagina feels better no UTI’s 🤞 but since starting them I have a heaviness in pelvic area and a few stomach aches . Is this normal? TIA

justasking111 · 30/05/2024 22:06

Jesus five days a week my GP said twice a day for two weeks, then twice a week. 30 gram tube every 28 days of blissel. It's taken me a few months in phone consultations to get oestrogen help. You'd think it was 24 carat gold dust.

LuckyCharmz · 30/05/2024 22:16

There’s a Vaginal Atrophy group on fb if you’re on there, lots of advice and other products mentioned etc.

justasking111 · 12/06/2024 23:05

Hurray after six months, five telephone consultations a bathroom cabinet full of leftover meds that didn't work another GP finally gave me estriol cream. Once a day for 3 or 4 weeks, then twice a week.

The good news is that the incontinence has stopped.

The not so good news is the itching still bothers me somewhat. But it's only been a week.

The daft thing is it's a small tube which will only last two weeks maximum I realised so I'm wondering if they'll give me an extra one this month.

Insertion was so painful at first but now much easier.

@justasking111 It should last longer than 2 weeks.
The tube is 15gms.
It should last 4 weeks even using it once a day.

Then you're not inserting them in far enough. I insert until the applicator can't go any further, so most of the applicator length.

I'm to fill the syringe to the red line, one mg a day for four weeks. It's a Gram tube so 15 day supply. It's around pea size dose.

I'll phone the GP today.
